Folks,
Anyone know if this oil pan fits and doesn't hang too low on the frame?
Canton Racing Products
15-660 For Ford 351W For Front T Sump Street Road Race Pan
It says 8" deep and I think that means it sits too low.
Yes?

I just measured 3 cars in my shop yesterday for a customer with an upcoming build…when using Energy Suspension mounts with a Windsor anything deeper than 7.5” will be below the frame rails.

Thanks Jeff. That is what I thought. Pointer towards an oil pan that works?

Check out Aviaid. Those were the original pans in the early cobras and daytonas. Great baffles. Little pricey, but good quality. I have a 6.5" deep pan. Here is a link: https://aviaid.com/shopsite_sc/store/html/ws_oilpns_sbf.html

Have to keep in mind what depth the oil pimp pick up sits in the pan.

Good post as I was thinking the stock pan would work just fine.

Define “stock pan”. If you’re talking Windsor from a Fox or SN95 it will. If you’re referring to a 4.6 or Coyote it won’t.

When I bought my MkII from the original builder I immediately started running autocrosses. About the 3rd AX I heard some engine noise so limped it home. Pulled the pan. It was a front sump w/ absolutely no baffles of any kind. And the rear wall of that sump was at about a 45degree angle up to the shallow end. My thought was that every hard accel the oil ran up that rear wall and it lost oil pressure. I had spun a rod bearing, so new rod, machined crank and bought a road race pan from Breeze. So a REAR SUMP stock pan may be OK but not a front sump.

A stock pan is fine if you don't take the car on a track. These cars corner hard enough that you will push the oil away from the pickup and you'll be pumping air. Been there, done that, saw my pressure gauge drop to zero on a hard turn, while on the street, not even a track. That was on my 1st engine with a stock pan. I now have a Kevco, with trap doors, crank scrapper and windage tray, no more pressure loss, no matter how hard it gets pitched.

I've been using the champ Road race gated oil pan for a 302 with great success on my last 2 builds.

I too had a stock pan and saw bearing damage from hard cornering during back country road driving. I now have a Canton road race front sump 8 quart pan with all the bells and whistles. The engine mounts are are the mustang convertible type which, I believe, sit the engine a little lower. Made a couple of skid rails that are mounted to the bottom of the 4 inch round tubes. Protects the pan sump from speed bumps etc. Nothing is going to protect the pan if you centre punch an object higher than the rails anyway.

I'm new to all of this...starting my first build with a donor car and engine is in the shop for overhaul. I see in the documentation that a shallow pan is needed, and this thread is very helpful. If all I am going to be doing is weekend joy riding, can I stick with the factory oil pan on a 2002 4.6L? It's rather expensive to get a decent shallow pan, pickup, pump, etc. Thank you.

You will not need a new pump as the pickups are interchangable. Just buy the pickup matched to the pan.

A pan hanging below the frame rails can be gone on your first trip to the supermarket if you hit a speed bump. My ride height is 4"X4.5" and have kissed some speed bumps moving very slowly. Frame rails kept all the expensive parts safe.

I am thinking about this pan for a 427 SBF build. I like the 'combo packs' Summit has for the MkIV. 7.5" depth. Thoughts?

Like David, I went with a Champ Pan for my 302 https://www.champpans.com/products/p/cp302lt-rr/.
I bought it from Gordon Levy. If you call Gordon & Mike Forte and ask their advice, you'll have your answer.
