View Full Version : What coil do you have? Blueprint 347 EFI - bad coil or wrong coil?

Hi all, I finally broke down and sent my car to a tech rather than continuing to bumble through diagnosing an efi stumble/stall that occurred when the alternator was connected. He found that it had an MSD Blaster 2 coil that he suggested should have a controller, which it did not. Replaced with a different coil and all good. For those of you who have a BP 347 with sniper, what coil do you have?
Thanks, Earl

My Blueprint 347 with Sniper EFI came with a Top Street Performance JM6502R Ford Small Block 221-302 HEI Distributor with Red OEM Cap & 65K Volt Coil. After a few thousand miles the engine did not run well after about 10 minutes of run time. Worked with Blueprint and Holley to try and figure it out which included replacing the Sniper with a new unit which did not good at all. Changed to a carburetor and still had same problem. A bad coil was the root cause. Blueprint sent me a new distributor assembly and after putting this in the engine ran fine.

I wouldn't give you a dollar for car load of MSD coils. Three in a row failed, all at between 2-4000 miles. I now have an original factory Ford coil from a 1993 Mustang, been perfect for well over 10,000 miles.

Maybe my friend Mark Burger will see this and discuss his coil experiences which include coasting to the side of the road...repeatedly.

Jeff,

Thanks for reminding me! In Atlanta at 5:30 on a Tuesday night on our way to LCS. 6 lanes of traffic one way. At least we found a better pull off spot and on our way in less than 30 mins.

Not to forget on I-70 between Columbus and London in 2022. I think Mark carries spares for a reason ;)

Ever since switching to a 30 yr old coil, and having a second one in the trunk, everything has been golden. ;)

Thanks all, MSD issues aside, the tech said it was an inappropriate coil for a sniper and then said a bunch of stuff I did not understand. He believed that at battery voltage the coil was sending a bit too much but tolerable voltage to the system/distributor, at alternator voltage it was too much and something was causing the sniper to get confused. For me its more works/doesn't work for now, but after a painful experience diagnosing that included multiple calls to both Holley and BP I feel the need to be better informed as to how the ignition and efi systems operate. Carrying a spare seems like a smart move and I certainly know the symptoms now. Since its there he is going to dyno tune today so that I have a drivable car and a baseline for timing & afr.

Rich,

Is this the coil you use?

Looking to have a spare for the MSD that I'm running now and may just swap to something proven and keep the MSD as the spare since I already have it.

I have a Sniper system with their Hyperspark distributor. The coil is a Pertronix Flamethrower mounted on the driver’s side F panel. The Sniper can be finicky and just shut off due to RF interference. Even their own distributor threw off too much noise for it to work. Ended up shielding the distributor to get it to run right.
If your problem returns try wrapping the distributor in aluminum foil.

Yep Dave thats what I have. Over the years I ended up with 3 of them, but one got dropped  and the terminal got broken. I would use an iron core coil of any make, before I'd ever use an oil filled one, especially if you have EFI with an ignition box.

Thank you. This is what I was sent with all the stuff I got from Jim with the stacks.

MSD coil on my 347 BP EFI didn't even last until a few miles on the road. Had to replace it when still at the paint shop! Since then no problem.

Dave the coil you showed in the link was an iron core, not oil filled. I wouldn't be afraid to try that, it's the round oil filled MSD coils I will not use.

You two are a riot!!
And yes, I‘ll always have a spare, but I’m done with MSD Blaster coils!
Coincidentally they both failed within the same mileage window.

Both hyperspark distributor and coil. No issues other than emi interference which is the sniper unit and not the coil. The plug and play and ability to manipulate timing curve is amazing.

Nick & Norm, how did you shield the rfi/emi from the sniper?

I bought interference wire loom from McMaster carr. Took care of the problem completely and no signs when I data log.

I installed the loom on the harness of sniper, the three connectors and the temperature sensor.

I guess anything can fail. I ask why? I've had the same MSD Blaster and 6AL2 on mine for over 15yrs and put others on cars that don't have issues. Of course, it's all personal preference. I have lost O2 sensors and 2 Holley DS distributors, but that's another topic.

I made a shield out of thin aluminum sheeting to fit over the distributor and grounded that to the frame. Covered the mess with a Cobra distributor cover I got off eBay.
