Greetings to All and Happy Independence Day,

After a loooong layoff I’m back at it. Laying out the dash with the “Competition Layout” and I have a question. How close can the gauge placement be to the dash hoop. While laying out the gauges I wanted to keep them as close to the dash hoop as possible but after looking at it I’m wondering if my layout is TOO close. How much overhang is there when the body is on, and will the overhang “impede” the view of the gauges? As I now have them placed, the Oil Pressure and Water Temp gauges are about 1/4” below the bottom of the dash hoop. Is this too close?

As always, much obliged to all of you for this forum. Can’t imagine doing this project without all of the invaluable help from you guys.

Cheers to all,
Greg

The more important thing to consider the the hoop behind the gauge. If you are below that, you should be fine with the front unless you have some crazy sized bezels. One of my guages, I actually had to grind into the hoop about 1/8" to make it fit and the front was completely fine. You can see the in this picture, the Oil PSI was the culprit; although it looks really close, upon final body fitting, I have about a 1/4" gap between the bezel and body.

It's more about interference with the body in most cases. The body protrudes about 1/2" inch in from the front of the dash and sits about the same below the top of the dash. Make sue your bezels clear the body.
