This is one of the things that absolutely drives me crazy. Any ideas how to improve?
My thinking is to use the weather stripping that is used on the door jams and slip it over the carpet and aluminum cockpit panel.

On my car it's easy to push the aluminum back almost an inch. You could use a soft round dowel or a piece of soft material about 1/2" to 3/4" thick to push the edge away from the body to expose each section one at a time. Then you have options. You could use a black sharpie, or paint to color the lighter region so it wouldn't be so easy to see. Or, the better option if you're confident with it, put a small dab of contact cement there. Be very careful not to get any on the existing carpet. Use a toothpick or something very small as a brush to apply the contact cement since they are small areas. Push very small pieces of carpet fabric fuzz onto the contact cement until that area is covered. The easiest way to make the small pieces is to use scissors with a small scrap of carpet to make / cut off fuzz. Be very careful with the contact cement, it sticks to anything and is real hard to remove after drying. While wet you can use rubbing alcohol. After it's all dry you can trim it with small scissors or cutters. Or you could put in high back seats to hide it.

You could probably make 90% of it disappear with a bit of black paint.

You may be able to attach a rug trim to the top. Like a bulb seal, they come without the bulb. Or you can add a rug trip with a small soft bulb to sort of pop out a bit. I used this on by upper carpet trim here. The color is a grey to closely match the grey in my carpet stripe.
