View Full Version : Replacement heads and side pipe alignment

Given what I learned about my cam and heads from my 'collapsed lifter thread', it looks like I'll be replacing my heads - so here is my question.
Will I have any issue with my side pipe alignment if I go from Edelbrock to AFR heads?
I'm hoping all of the various heads have a standard exhaust plane but I wanted to ask first just in case it is a factor in my selection criteria.
Thanks,
Richard

Why not just fix the problem with heads you have? It'll be a fraction of the cost of new heads, they can cut the spring seats and install the correct springs. Which should have been checked during the build

I have AFR heads on a stroked 351 Boss Block. Passenger side was a piece of cake, driver's side was a real PITA. You'll spend a lot of time getting the DS spaced off the footbox and may need some shims for the side exhaust.

As Gordon said, "Those are awfully small heads for that engine."
I would rather get new heads that don't remind me of the Beetlejuice shrunken head guy.
I agree with you about the engine builder...

Typical gl, trying to sell you something you don't really need. It's a street car, not a track car? You said you wouldn't spin it about 5800rpm's so why do you need bigger heads? Large flow will help at high rpm's, but can hurt at lower rpm's when just drive around town. You have extra $$$$ to spend, great, send me the old heads then. I can make them work just fine

I appreciate Gordons help and your perspective too.
Be clear though, I don't 'need' anything about this car.
I'm just having fun doing things the way I want to do them.
Looks like the AFR heads exhaust ports are raised .375 in. higher than stock so that complicates things a bit.
I have another 351w block that I'm going to build out in the future which will make me buying new heads easier to swallow if I go that route.
Thanks again for your guidance,
Richard

Well, I'm probably going with the AFR 205s as they are only .125 higher than stock.
I'll update how they impact the headers and side pipes for future interest.
Also, the tuner ran a simulation with my setup. The red line is the AFR205s and the maroon line is the current setup.
The Edelbrock falls down at 4000 rpms as it tries to push all those cubes. The AFR's keep climbing to 6000.
This checks out as I felt it struggling when I got it on the track a few weeks ago. Video below.
It was just a spirited tour but I was able to stretch its legs a few times. It came out of the turns strong and then just felt a little flat.
The AFRs will also help down low on torque where I was having drivability issues.
Anyway, new heads for me.

AFR 205s are good heads and a great choice for a street 427. I'm running 225s, now discontinued, and replaced by the better flowing 220s.

you'll like those heads I have them on a 363 stroker I had built. The motor made 412hp to the wheels, I have 1 7/8" headers, also using an air gap with a super sucker 3/4" four hole spacer with Sniper/Hyperspark setup. The engine will pull clean from 1500 rpm in 3rd and 4th gears..
I'm running the AFR 195s (which have the same exh port as the 205) on my 347 and the stock headers aligned just fine.
