Yesterday, I was driving past the DMV in Folsom, CA and decided to stop in on a whim; no appointment, not even any documentation for my build. Previously, I got a one day pass from another DMV (Auburn, CA) to take the car to the CHP for VIN assignment, but that date is still three weeks out and is dated for that day. I decided to stop in because I was hoping to walk out with at least one more pass to move the car. I was hoping for an "undated" pass so that I could just keep it with me when I go get my alignment, want to go for a cruze, other inspections, etc.
This Folsom DMV was clueless about California's SB 100 process. The guy (kid) at the counter was really nice but said I needed a VIN number before I could start the process. He also said that he couldn't give me a pass to move the vehicle without starting the registration process. I played dumb and asked "how am I going to get the car to the CHP for VIN assignment without a pass?" He said "Good point" and we started the process of registration.
Low and behold, about 30 minutes later, I got a two month temporary driving tag that is unrestricted for driving!! So I am technically legal to drive anywhere I want. I even got the temporary permit sticker for the window so I won't get pulled over. I don't think this is normal for California DMV's. Normally we'll get a one or three day pass with restrictions for just those inspections. I left with such excitement from that DMV, I actually wanted to get the kid a Starbucks card but I was afraid if I went back in, they might recall the kid's call to give me the pass. I still need to get the VIN number, Brake and Light inspection, and get the SB 100 sticker from the BAR (Bureau of Automotive Repair) before I get my plates.
Maybe having a clueless crew at the DMV is the ticket?

Anyway, I got home, pulled out the Cobra and I put about 20 miles on it yesterday. I drove through the sister cities of Folsom and El Dorado Hills, received many "thumbs up" and waves. What an exciting day for me and #10333. I'm about 99% done with the build but can't wait to cruise around town this weekend!
Have a great day y'all.
