View Full Version : Dashboard "Side Wing" Mounting

So I’m trying to finalize my dashboard before wrapping it in leather and have a quick question regarding the side “wings.” From what I can see here on the board, it appears there are two main ways to mount them.

1. To tuck the wings on the inside edge of the door mounts (see “Inside”, below”) so they form a bit of a sharper curve, but are held in place by the door mounts themselves, and
2. To allow the wings to run out a bit wider so they better follow the lip of the body but not really be supported in any way, just kind of resting on top of the door mounts.

I’ve always been partial to the second way – allowing the dash to run out a bit wider so it better follows the lip of the body. My question is, it appears I need to cut out a notch into the underside of the passenger-side wing (as shown in red below) so that they don’t get pinched between the mount and the underside of the body itself. The driver side appears to be good and not need any cuts.

My question is – has anybody else had to do this? Am I missing something with the wing mounting? I’m just trying to avoid the sides of the dash looking a bit too “curved" and am decidedly nervous to cut into my dash this far into the game.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

I have a different dash (carbon fiber) but opted for the second method - just looked more natural in shape IMHO

a different shape for sure than the metal dash, but I cut off about 1.5" from the length and then shaped around the door hinge

I bent my DS around a rattle can and tucked it behind the hinge. I cut 2-3” off the PS and did the same

That end design is certainly an option, I wonder how the aluminum version would work if I cut it that short (but your picture there does show that the natural bend positions the dash lower than the bracket).

I'll have to do some thinking on that front, appreciate the pic.

when the dash is fully mounted it does not hit the hinge for the door

This is the advise I've been giving for 20 years....because it works. Don't attach the ends to anything. You really only need two screws to hold it up (its a 1.5lbs fully loaded). ...da Bat

And ironically you really only need two men to hold da Bat up when he's fully loaded.
