View Full Version : Lower trunk install delay

Any reason why I couldn’t install the upper/forward trunk area and leave the lower trunk (and drop trunk) to install later? This would leave the fuel system/rear wiring harness accessible for longer. Asking because I want to install the rear cockpit wall but need the upper/forward trunk riveted in first.
I want to get the cockpit finished so I can get the lizardskin spraying done. I’m thinking I can come back and spray sound insulation in the lower/drop trunk later. Maybe when I spray the DS footbox outer wall.
Only issue I see is the lower trunk aluminum lip would sit on top of the upper/forward trunk rather than under it, which shouldn’t matter if they’re both sprayed with sound insulation and covered in carpet.
I would rivert in the rear sides now but probably wait to install the small triangle aluminum pieces until the lower trunk/drop trunk is riveted/installed.
Thoughts? Am I missing something?

The prep work and masking off to spray Lizard Skin was a pretty big PITA. I wouldn't want to have to do that twice. If I were you, I'd do whatever I need to do to get all the sheetmetal riveted in and prepped, and then spray all the Lizard Skin in one go.

Dang John. How long did it take to prep? That is quite a setup.

Hehehe - it took way longer than I thought. It was probably a full day of masking off the parts of the car I didn't want to spray. The plastic sheeting in the background was set up pretty quickly using Zipwall poles that I had from a prior remodel where we needed to seal off part of the house. Being able to plastic off a temporary spray booth of sorts really helped cut down on overspray, but it still got all over things I never would have suspected. I definitely would not want to have to do all that setup, masking, and tear down and cleanup twice.

I have never worked w/ lizard skin but I wonder if you could spray the lower trunk panels when you do the rest of the car. You wouldn't get the nice coverage of that overlapping seam you mention but could that small area be done w/ a brush later?

CraigS, that was my plan. I won’t likely spray again as it does seem to be a lot of work to setup. Probably just roll on the sound insulation. It won’t be ideal but it’s the lower rear of the trunk area and the drop trunk, which will also be covered with carpet so as long as it attenuates some of the tinny-ness of the aluminum in the trunk area I’ll be happy.
