I ordered my roadster in February, 2006. I've been on the road for 2 years now, and I'm finally ready to drop the car off at Da Bat! I still don't have a final color combo decided but I have some ideas... I'll posts pics of the whole experience; I cant wait to be really done done!

Woohoo!

:)

Thanks in advance Jeff!

Just drop the car off along with a box-o-wine and tell Batty to call you when he's finished. What could possibly go wrong :p

On Tuesday we took the car to "Da Bat". Here it is on the rental trailer:

http://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=7082&d=1325185227

The drive was uneventful over to the Batcave. One thing I made a BIG mistake on! Remove all body accesories BEFORE delivery to the painter!! We wasted at least 2 hours disassembling the car.
Sorry Jeff!!
http://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=7085&d=1325185229

http://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=7084&d=1325185228

I had the kids with me for the delivery. My son Grant got a new Galaxy Tab for Christmas and was experimenting with it's built in camera. My daughter Madison made a willing model:

http://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=7081&d=1325185226

After a few hours of Jeff silently cursing me under his breath, the car was denuded of it's body. 2 years of driving it like I stole it became readily visible. Remember all those threads "back when" about polishing panels? A major refresh and sealing is now part of the prep plan:
http://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=7083&d=1325185228
http://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=7079&d=1325185221
http://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=7080&d=1325185225

As I surmised, Jeff is going to be shooting a color for the first time and I hope it comes out OK!

Painting a test panel is extra but I might pull the trigger on it to be sure the result will be worth the effort. Jeff's done some KILLER paint jobs that I've seen and I'm sure he'll hit this one out of the park as well.

More updates soon, as cleanup and prep of the chassis begins today!

Thanks for the support guys. To answer a couple of inqueries, my brother's build is currently on hold while he pursues new digs.

My color combo will seem familiar to some of you but I've never seen an example on an FFR.

I'm very happy to be out of the running for the longest build! 6 years is WAY too long!

I spent some time on the gocart this AM cleaning it up. underneith all the road grime, the panels don't look TOO bad. Definitely going to hit them with the polishing compound though! I'm going to pull the seats today and will start measuring the trunk for carpet. I'm going to have a custome piece made with a soft back that I can just lay in the trunk and be able to pull out to show off the polished panels. the interior will have upgraded carpet and the dash won't be as padded as is costomary with the standard kit. I'm also going to install the wiper motor finally.

I'm hoping to be re-assembled in February. Can't wait!

Yesterday I packed up the go-cart and drove out to Frankeeski's house. He is fabricating a full rollbar for me. I'm tellin ya, the guy is a genious. He built his own pipe bender, and it worked flawlessly, and the bar slipped on the car on the first try. I left his home with high confidence that my bar will be a perfect fit when it's done. Thanks for the kudos Dave. Worked a bit on your bar today when I got home. Got just the harness bar left to cut fish-mouths in and some deburring of the inside of the rear down tubes. Then it will be ready to test fit and tack weld, ready for finish welding. It's coming along, see you on Saturday.

BTW, You will soon be joining the ranks with your own integrated LED brake lights. Got the bar milled on Saturday afternoon and test fit the lights.

Lot's to look forward to!:) What would prevent him from painting it in your first choice color combo? Were the shades only available in a solvent base or something?

I'm surprised that he pulled the body off right away? I thought that he would leave it, and the windshield on, so they could line up the hood, trunk and doors initially. Isn't that how it's usually done? Did you take the go-kart back home with you, or are you working on it at his shop?

Curious, What did you use to seal off the rear wheel openings, at the top of the rear cockpit bulkhead, for the last two years, while you drove it? I didn't want to make it difficult to remove the body, for paint in the future, so I have been driving mine without any kind of seal at that point.

Driving in Gel-coat, does has it's advantages. You never have to worry about scratching it for one thing.. lol.

David Hodgkins
01-11-2012, 01:12 PM
Bill,

I should have taken off the windhield, it doesn't effect the body position on the frame. Also, all the lights should have been removed. The rear bumper was on, and it took a while to remove but you're right; it is better left on for positioning purposes.

Jeff did trim the doors while the body was still bolted on. The trunk and hood were not trimmed before the body was removed, but I'm not too worried about that, as I didn't do a dropped butt mod. I believe jeff has the process down to where he can fix any issues with hood or trunk warpage on his steel body buck.

re: the rear wheel openings, I clecko'd the cockpit trim next to the doors but didn't try to truely seal the trunk area, so I had small rocks in the trunk and cockpit accumulate over time. I will do a final sealing when the body goes on for the last time.

Driving in gel-coat was fun. I still had folks asking if it was an original, even with the seams.

Now as far as the color combo goes, I might as well spill the beans. I wanted to keep it a secret and just spring it on you guys but since it's not going to happen I will tell you. The original color combo was going to be brilliant silver with chrome stripes, so that it mimicked a Kirkham with polished stripes. It turns out the "chrome" paint is a 4 stage process, and is not durable. It would be OK for a trailer queen maybe, but not for a car that will be used as much as mine. I am building it to DRIVE, after all...

Plan B is... a secret! :) I haven't decided but it will probably be a traditional color.

:)

Driving in gel-coat was fun. I still had folks asking if it was an original, even with the seams.

That's funny, I had the same reaction from admirer's. I wandered over to one fellow who was looking at my car, and asked, "Have you ever seen one off these before?" He replied,"Never a real one!".
I think the rougher they look, the more people figure they have to be originals. After all, the majority of replica's do look showroom fresh. Almost makes me think I should dull down the shine after it's painted, to get that antique patina..:)

Couldn't you simply use the chrome decals for the stripes, to get that look you want? Only be obvious close up. I wonder if you could put clear coat over them?

David Hodgkins
01-14-2012, 12:32 PM
Bill, I considered that, but it don't float my boat. :)

I threw the rollbar on and snapped this pic tonight. The rollbar isn't fully seated so there is a gap but it gives you an idea what it'll look like.

http://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=7492&d=1326698598

LEDs will fill the holes in the center of the crossbar, and a harness bar will cross where it is marked on the side tubes. I'm going to go have it welded tomorrow and then it'll be chromed.

So I''ve been checking out the galleries on the other sites and this is what I've come up with, surprise surprise:
http://www.ffcars.com/forums/members/albums/27014-jethrow/cobra1-470-picture4666-cobra-sachs-csx6017-lightbluemetallic.jpg

I believe it's Viking Blue Metallic with Wimbleton White stripes.

I know, not exactly original...

But I've always leaned towards traditional colors, and no one in the family liked Candy-apple Red so this is where we're at.

My previous favorite was Joe Fournier's:
http://www.factoryfive.com/photogalleries/joef/DSC07721.jpg

It's Acapulco Blue Metallic,67-70 mustang. the sherwin williams code is U7-2580-G. SW ultra 7000 base, with their high performance clear.

So when it comes down to it, I like the Viking Blue over the Acapulco Blue...

U like?

Thanks Marcel...

Calling out a paint job by Name is a bit frightening. I looked at the ****** site for the paint code and they have a section where you can choose a color for a new continuation car. Viking blue wasn't even close!

I called and talked to Jeff today and told hime about the pic in this post. He's going to match it up and we'll go from there. He also said all the body pref was done! Woohoo! Won't be long now!

I also tried a search of the Viking blue and found refferences to the coupe. Link below is to an article from Superformance but seems relevent.

http://bre2.net/pdfs/Tech%20Doc%20-%20The%20Aesthetics%20of%20Color%20and%20Design.pd f

Also, seems like the Viking blue is lighter in some of the photos that I've seen. I really like the colors in the photo you posted and I hope Jeff can get you there.

Let me know what you come up with. Hope you are ready for AHA and FFR HB events.

Would love to help if you need it. :)

I've been doing what a lot of guys do when it comes to this stage...

Panicking!!

I did research on the car above (csx6017) and found out it had been repainted from Red to the color above. I then found a pic that convinced me it was a color similar to Mini Cooper electric blue:
http://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=7677&d=1328122033

That's not the color I'm seeing in my mind. Meanwhile, I was given a LOT of choices by Jeff on color. I chose a color and he purchased the paint, but I didn't feel right about it. The color was too modern for me, with
lots of contrast when light bounced off of it. I had picked out a color similar, but not equal to, CobraJJ's color, Sorry for the big pic:
http://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=7678&d=1328122035

Meanwhile, I found some recent posts by Lex that were posted. He recently repainted his roadster in the original color code for guardsman blue:
http://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=7681&d=1328122039

http://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=7682&d=1328122040

I love this color! I PM'd Lex and got the color code and had Jeff check into it. Turns out it's still available in a solvent base, so I bit the bullet on my first color choice ($$$) and Jeff has ordered the paint.

Thanks for your help Lex!

You know; I think you may have been miss informed about the chrome paint M8! It can be made to be just as tough as any paint on the market. I'm just wondering, but I bet the chroming system you were told about was not Spectra Chrome; the chroming system I use! I can create any color chrome you can think of. Hot pink. purple, gold, black mirror, and on most types of surfaces. Metal, plastic, wood, stone etc. While it won't handle heat much over say 200 degrees (tends to darken) It is just as tough as any paint your painter is going to put on your ride! I assume you are in SoCal. If so, might I suggest you check out Creations & Chrome I think they are located in SoCal. You may have seen some of there work. They did a Audi A8 in chrome with West Coast(tv show) Customs to make a TRON car. Have your painter do the paint job in the color you want & then send the body, hood & trunk to have the stripes chromed/siverplated on your ride! Then have your painter finish his job via clear coating.I would offer to do it for you, but I live on the Right Coast:) I plan to have my side oiler at the FFR summer meet with a few small parts chromed to show to those who might be interested! Hey! mabe if your timing is right you could make your 1st(roadster) road trip. After this many years of construction you deserve it !!! DOHHH!! Sry M8, I just fliped to the last thread entry to reply. Without reading previous threads & not seeing your car was painted! It looks awsome!! You should still consider that road trip though :)

Jeff put the body outside for me so this was my first glimpse:

Jeff pulled it into the sun and I got some great pics (for a cellphone).

Digging the body-colored louvers!

Jeff had the hood and trunk inside his house so this is an indoor shot:

I can't say enough about Jeff's workmanship. I'm gonna have a grin a mile wide driving down the road!

Thanks D. Still waiting to see what Dave is planning for a finish on that bar. Then we can install it and tie in the LED brake lights.

Hooked up the new sidepipes to the newly ceramic-coated cats - purdy - and finished the last of the new rear cockpit wall prep, rubbed sealant into the exposed aluminum, hooked the the gas tank and electrical back up and test fired the engine (still works ;) ). The tone of the new pipes are a little deeper and muted compared to the factory pair. Nice.

I'm up at 5:30 tomorrow to wire up the gauges, hook the wiper motor back up, put the car on the trailer and then it's off to Da Bat Cave!

David

Man, that looks great. Color is perfect and the trunk looks sooo shiney. Glenn really comes through when he's up to the task. Dash looks great.

At this pace you might even make it to the AHA show.

Sorry David, Stole this picture from another thread but........................WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That view of the car even without all of the trim and windscreen in looks unbelievable. The car looks so tough from that view. I am not going to break my arm patting myself on the back but that roll bar is out of control. Although it still has no coating on the bar yet, the harness bar looks to have come out in just the proper location. Good call! Can't wait to see the car all finished up. Way to go Buddy!!!!

I look at that pic above and it's like the car is saying:
"I've been patient long enough. Let's get this show on the road as there's Viper's, Ferrarri's and Vettes I NEED to squash!":D
