How did y'all do it? Did you just leave your laptop connected and on the passenger seat while you gunned down the highway? I might be overthinking this...

Don't know about Lund but in the bad old days when beta testing JB4 tunes had a looong wire that ran from under the hood to my lap top on the passenger seat.

You have it right. Set up for data logging, find a safe place for the sprint, hit the record button and run it to red line.
Please have enough go-cart time to feel confident in the car being safe, ie leaks, brakes, all bolts tight, steering, tire pressure, everything tied down in the car. I recommend having a good alignment prior to the run.
I had too much tire pressure, felt like I was on a beach ball. Things happen fast, at 500 hp, 8000 rpm.
My WOT run was anxiety high. The engine shut down, when I let off the throttle. I could not hear the engine, brakes are manual, no problem. Steering is power, just steered to the shoulder. Nervous about hitting the key to start, but all was well.
Too short cold air intake tube, Lund tuner advised.
Be safe, let us know how it goes.

I don't know about where you live, but a WOT run in 3rd on the street in my neck of the woods is (1) way too fast (easily well over 100 mph) for my safety mindset with other cars around, and (2) way too attractive for ever present LEO's. A ticket at that speed would be considered reckless driving, could involve a suspension, and likely would make you uninsurable for the car. All risks I was unwilling to accept. I told Lund I would only do the WOT run in 2nd. And briefly. They were OK with that and said the data I collected was fine. Something to consider.

Lemme see if I got this straight... Lund sells a tuner that requires you to hammer it in 3rd in order to get an accurate tune? Is it possible they're thinking you can do this on a dyno?

Please understand, I come from the world of carburetors, wideband oxygen sensors, and fully customizable ECU's where I have total control from idle to redline. I can't understand how WFO in 3rd is helpful in any way to get a good tune.

What Paul and MB759 said. WFO to redline on the street in a car that you are totally unfamiliar with doesn’t fit into the “good idea” category in my world.

I do not think the 3rd gear item is specific, just ruling out the other gears for obvious reasons. 2nd gear in some cars will be all wheel spin, no engine load. 4th gear, for obvious reasons. A dyno pull is without doubt the best option.

The physical tuner, does not require anything. It data logs, what the person tuning the car wants to see under selected conditions.
Without doubt you know this, but wanted to say it for those not reading past the verbiage used.
I think all good info for the OP, allowing him to make the right decision for him and his car.

I would think it would be just a short run at wide-open throttle, not to the rev limiter.

I agree with others that it is too risky to perform on street. I tried in second, but with cold weather at the time, I got too much wheel slip.
I ended up taking it to my local dyno tuner and they ran it in 4th gear. You can just see the pointer on the Speedo going past 260 kmh!

When I emailed Lund advising that I couldn't load the engine up enough on the street, the tuner I was corresponding with said I was gutless and shouldn't be driving such a car. Personally, I felt Joe was a first class f***wit that was happy to take a sizable chunk of money, then be rude about requesting a delay in the tuning process whilst I sourced dyno time. He also couldn't seem to deal with Australian octane ratings. I ended up working with my local guys. They nailed it

All the best, Nige.

G'day Rich,

Lund are very specific with RPM request. It was at least 6K for me. My tyres probably weren't the best and I just couldn't stop wheel spin onces the rpm went high.

Cheers,

Nige.

Taller gear = more hits in the histogram and less chance of wheels spin. The downside is velocity.

We have identical drivetrain and I just went to the drag races last week. 121 mph in the 1/4 in 3rd gear at 7700 rpm.
I wouldn't even think about it on the street. Do 2nd gear which is still about 85-90mph. I did 2nd gear pulls for Lund.

I just did it a few weeks ago.. stopped at 105, about 6500, and it showed Lund everything they needed…

I would think it would be just a short run at wide-open throttle, not to the rev limiter.

My run identified that the factory supplied tubing was not large enough to supply fuel for the HP these engines put out at 7000 rpm. didn't show up until 6500 rpm. Definitely 2nd gear....... and whoa - hold on.

I’m surprised that Lund doesn’t have a tune that just works by now. My tuner did about four coyotes for me. Once he was satisfied with the tune he just loaded into the car and it works perfect. Never even take it off the trailer anymore. We even did this with the latest St Jude car. Computer was loaded into a cobra here and programmed then shipped off the TN where the build was happening.

They can get pretty darn close. When I first started up my gen 2 coyote it ran really poorly. I wasn't anywhere close to being able to do any datalogging so I reached out to them, described my setup, and they sent me a file based on someone else's car with a similar setup. Now that my car is on the road I'll eventually get around to doing some datalogging on my own car, but it runs surprisingly well with the "in the ballpark" tune.

I think they are at that point - they gave me their standard tune and after the logs there were no changes.

Thanks everyone for your tips and suggestions. I have about 700 miles on the car now and about half of that has been on the highway. I've also confirmed before this that WOT at 3rd gear won't lose traction. The speed was the main concern as (like others have confirmed above) 7000 in 3rd gear is going to put me just above 100mph and I'm not willing to get my car impounded for a data-logging run.

Luckily there's a stretch of interstate (I-280) not too far from me with nicely paved smooth road where, based on experience, folks frequently cruise at 90mph+ on a daily basis. On Saturday I went out to scout out the road during the hottest time of day ~2pm. I picked the smoothest and straightest part and did a WOT pull to about 6.7k which put me slightly faster than the second fastest car on the road. I think I clocked out at around 96MPH.

I sent the logs to Lund and they were able to work with it. I think with good alignment, tires, and a smooth hot tarmac the WOT at 3rd gear is manageable. I'm not telling y'all to go crazy at 100mph+ tho.

Hey, that's good to know. I was thinking of using 280 on the peninsula also. Glad to hear it worked out for you.

Yep! There's a long straight between Alpine Road exit and Page Mill exit.
