View Full Version : CV Shaft Boot
I swear... I searched before starting this post.
Last week at the Dyno, I guess the driver CV shaft boot (brake side) did not like revving up 6th gear into almost 8.000 rpms and ripped on our last run.
Now for the question.
Anyone knows a replacement part number?
What would be the best method of swapping it? I do not have an expander.

Attached is a picture of what I bought but have not yet installed.
I've had two outer boots split- I THINK from expanding and rubbing on something.
I've used two of these over the past year with good success as a temporary fix:

Pretty soon I will pull both half-shafts and have a go at boot replacement.
I will say that these Motorcraft boots are much tougher- almost like hard plastic- compared to the soft rubber boots that came on my half-shafts.
Any idea what wheel speed in mph you were hitting on the dyno?

Thanks Dave.
I don`t have exact figures, but I believe the tires were at 2500 rpm`s (although that was a hub dyno, so the shaft were at 2500 rpm)

Yes, that is pretty common. When I was racing my FFR I went through a lot of boots until I got this figured out.
Proper replacement requires you to remove the axle, and disassemble from the inside joint. It sounds daunting, but it's really not that hard. I remove the axle and upright as one unit.

Do not use the entire package of grease. Only use about half of it. The weight of the full package will cause the boot to tear.
Place 1-2 zip ties around the boot to give it extra support.
For some reason, the boot likes to twist on the axle. I don't know exactly why. Leave the clamp off of the small end of the boot.

For a tire around 25-26" in diameter that is ~190+ mph, lol...

I wonder if the twisting is actually slipping from centrifugal force. The larger end of the boot is traveling slower than the small end and eventually slips or twists backwards to rotation? I don't know, sounds but I'm no physics major...

Nope, both travel at the same speed (rpm's).
