View Full Version : Quick questions on fuel neck filler and vent bushing

Should the rib in the middle of the fuel neck be pushed past the first layer of the rubber grommet, or should it be pushed just up against it? As in, should that metal rib that I知 pointing to in the picture sit in the space that I have indicated with the red stick in the other picture?

Also, I made the mistake of trying to screw the brass vent valve as far into the white bushing as I saw in the manual, and I cracked the bushing. Anyone know where I can find another one? I知 not sure what to look up online.

While you are getting everything right, be sure you have replaced the F5 filler neck grommet with a FORD product.
If you have not, just stop, until you get one.
Then, put a little motor oil on the metal rib of the filler neck and push in past the first groove of the grommet.
I put a ground strap on the filler neck and the tank side of the filler neck.
No help on the vent grommet.
good luck,

Why is that? What’s the flaw with the F5 grommet? Thank you!

It's a knock-off and demonstrated lower quality than the OE Ford grommet. High probably it will rip or tear or leak. Usually sooner than later. Given that they're not particularly easy to replace once everything is assembled, car completed, etc., most (including me) recommend using the Ford OE grommet to start with. Cheap $30 - $40 insurance policy. Put the two side-by-side and you will see the difference.
For the vent, can't help you with one like that other than contacting FF. Another option is Mark at Breeze sells a "big bore" vent kit that is supposedly better. I've used it on several builds. https://breezeautomotive.com/shop/big-bore-vent-check-valve-kit/.

Back to your original question - the bead on the filler neck is to prevent it from pulling past the bracket that you bolt to the frame. You don't need to push it into the grommet.

I agree. I luckily checked mine after installing it and after only e few months it was torn badly. Get a ford replacement, cheap insurance.

My apologies for replying from memory. John sounds quite certain in his response, so his advise should be followed.
I get awakening moments like this, so I will be lying down to confirm on my roadster.

Ha! Now you've got me wondering!
I just looked on my car, and I think I'm right that the bead doesn't have to be seated, but the bracket sits awfully close - almost flush - to the gasket when installed. So it's possible the bead gets pushed past that first layer. In my case, the gap between the bracket and the gasket isn't uniform, which means the bead is not fully seated in the gasket. With over 4000 miles and no leaks, I'm not gonna fiddle with it!

No the bead doesn't get pushed into the seal. It's for the keeper so the tube can't be pulled out of the tank.

VKannan,
As always, sage advice given (above) in the various responses. With that said, I didn't use the bushing that came with the kit. PM me your address and I can send you mine!

Well I'm glad I found this post. I just had the same questions as I assembled my tank.
Vent valve
Did the exact same and screwed the vent valve in too far, splitting the plastic bushing. Guessing it was too much teflon tape?
By the way, manual says to use teflon tape in this assembly portion, but doesn't give any guidance on where / how much. Pretty easy to know where it goes, but feel like if you use just a smidge too much, it'll blow the plastic bushing. Also - all the pictures in the paper manual / e-manual don't have teflon tape...
With that said, any objections to using the fully plastic valve mentioned previously here (https://lmr.com/item/LRS-9593A/1979-99-Mustang-Fuel-Tank-Vapor-Valve)? The FFR supplied one is brass which feels higher quality...but what do I know!
Filler neck grommet
After assembling the FFR grommet / filler neck, I had the same feeling. There felt like a lot of "play" in the filler neck, even after getting the bracket as tight as I could against the grommet.
FYI the latest manual shows that you need to drill holes for the filler neck retaining bracket, but mine (delivered in July) already had predrilled holes. Guessing they had issues with folks drilling through the welds.
An earlier post mentioned that the retaining bracket on the neck tube doesn't need to be flush with the grommet. Makes sense because there is no way to do that - the retaining bracket that goes around the filler neck has an extended arm that screws into the tank, crossing over the grommet - which would make it impossible to seat within the grommet fully. I think the main concern is whether the end of the filler neck backs out, which the bracket would stop.
With that said, does anyone have a link they could share with a Ford OE filler neck replacement? This seems like cheap insurance from an obvious leak point down the line which would be hard to service.
Last question - Manual doesn't mention it, but the FFR youtube videos do. Are you guys using gasket sealant on the o-rings for the fuel pickup and gauge sender? The seals seem tight, but again, better safe than sorry here. If so, are you doing it when you assemble the tank or is there any reason to wait and do it later?

Tank fill gasket is:
Ford part F4ZZ-9072-DA
And for your last question, no sealant around the pickup and sender openings. Use some silicone plumbers grease or some use regular grease.

Do NOT use the sealant. It'll get hard over time and leak. Use only the o-rings, and a small amount of lubricant to let the flanges slip and slide without disturbing the o-ring. I used vaseline, some use motor oil.

Ford say use motor oil on the tank O-rings.

As always, thanks guys. Parts are on their way and I'll use a little oil on the o-rings.

I made the same mistake and cracked the white plastic vent bushing. What did you do to replace it?
Thanks!
