View Full Version : Gap between IRS center section and frame where bolted

Hi everyone,

Working on MK4. Got the IRS center section in but where it's bolted, I have more space than I'd expect between the section and the frame.

The gap where it's bolted in front is about 1/4". (Pic attached - it's the one with the red torque mark.). The rear one is about 1/8". Wouldn't even really notice that one if it wasn't for the front.

It's not terrible but I'd expect it to be snug. Bolts are torqued, so just tightening it up isn't the answer. Also, given space in both front and back, it's also not a matter of me just rebolting and shifting the unit forward or back a bit. I'll just make the other space larger.

Hopefully it's fine but I'm checking with the experts so I don't finish the car and have a terrible vibration coming from the back because yup, it's supposed to be snug and I should have thrown a washer in to close the gap!

Thanks in advance,
ST

Are the sleeves too long? Tough to tell from pics.

No - sleeves are ok. That's bolt you're seeing in the gap, not sleeve. Thanks!

I would put a washer or 2 in the space.

Thanks all for the input. Mike, glad to hear that. Can you tell me more about why it's not an issue? Thanks! ST

I had the same when putting my IRS in recently. For me it was the other side. The frame mounts toward the front of the car had a gap and the sleeves peaking out.

I snapped two pictures and sent to FF tech support. Got a response that it was ok. Told me to tighten the mounts that are attached to the rear cover first. This would be the one at the back af the car. Then tighten up the front ones. I loosened up the front, tightened up the back, and redid the front. Put some witness marks on it. Will add to my "check it out annually list".

I am guessing if the space was any tighter, it would be a real pain to get the DIFF in. It already is a pain.

As long as it does awesome burnouts. I'll be good. Haha.
