View Full Version : Turn Signal Switch

With the unfortunate passing of Russ Thompson, my plan for turn signals is sort of disarray. I originally planned to use his modification and was on the list for last month to send my steering wheel hub to him before the sad news on the board of his untimely passing. I have not seen any alternatives to his design on the board or via google search. I am trying to collect all my components to start the wiring section of the build and this switch is now an open item for me.

I have looked at simple switches (backordered from FFR), Amazon turn signal push buttons/toggle switches with arrows, and various light management systems. Most of the systems seem like overkill for the Roadster, while the basic switches seem out of place. I would like to see some installs on the dash of turn signal, hazard, horn switches that you folks have done. I need some better inspiration than my searches on the forum and google.

Thanks

Bill

I have a simple momentary on-off-on toggle switch and a self canceling module by signal dynamics.
.
flip the switch for a second, and it blinks like 7 times. hold it for 2 seconds, blinks like 20 times. hold it for 4+ seconds, blinks like 40 times.
the momentary switch allows me to flip it up or down for right hand or left hand signaling.
I have another push switch under the dash to activate hazards (simultaneously triggers left and right wires).
Others have used a left and right push switch on the dash, with hazard activation by pushing both buttons at once.

I've used Signal Dynamics modules on every car I've built and with Russ' passing am about to do the same on a Coupe I'm involved with. Activation wise I have used various methods---momentary on/off/on rocker mounted horizontally so that you tip left for left, right for right, momentary on/off/on toggle mounted so that up is left and down is right, kind of like the stalk in a daily driver and also two momentary pushbuttons side by side. In all cases I've mounted the switches or buttons just to the left of the wheel close enough that they can be activated easily with the same motion that we're used to in our "conventional" cars.

I did the same as egchewy with 2 momentary switches on my coupe. This eliminates the need for for the flasher relays and simplifies the emergency flasher wiring if you use the 2 momentary switch method. I have the same module on the cobra and it has been great.

Jeff, does your wife know about this?

Prior to retrofitting Russ' setup on my car last year, I was also using the SDC setup, and it worked great. I'll see if I can find the thread where I documented my install.

Thanks to all for the quick replies. I guess I was overthinking the problem and just need to do the easy button with SDC. Thanks again

I'm in the minority here but I did the same with the SDC module and ended up going back to the relay with latching buttons. If you want a set of momentary buttons (exact same ones in Papa's build he referenced above) and and my old SDC module you can have them for free. Would just need you to pay for the shipping. When I took it out I cut some of the wires short but there are pigtails you can add new wiring to. I think I have the diodes too, can take it all.

I will take them. Let me know the cost to 34241 and how to get the money to you

Looks like it will be in the neighborhood of $10. I'll DM you

someone not long ago asked the same question.

I used a long handle toggle switch. I don't know the correct name but it stays in whatever position you put it in and is center off w/ an on in each direction. Mounted on the dash so I could extend my fingers on my left hand to activate and deactivate it. You can mount so it moves left and right or so it moves up and down like the stalk in a regular car. If you get a Cole-Hersey w/ the round cross section lever they also have a plastic extension that slides onto the lever. It will slide through a range of maybe 3/4inch so you can adjust your final length. A simple <$20 switch and done.

I made my own by modifying a switch from a 1971 Volvo. Made a cancelling lug to fit on the steering column. Went with the competition dash to allow for the installation.
