View Full Version : Stack injection cold air

If you're one of those function over form people like me you'll appreciate this. Daytona Coupe owners know about the hot box the engine sits in. Not much ventilation going on in there! Drawing intake air from the heat trap under the hood doesn't promote efficient combustion. After a fair amount of searching for a solution I decided to fabricate my own cold air system. With a carburetor it's not too hard to install a carb hat and duct to a remote filter. With 8 individual throttle bodies it's a much bigger challenge. These photo's show the first prototype of my solution.

The intake manifold has threaded bosses in the valley which, with a little all-thread and an aluminum channel provide the structural base for the box.

Raw aluminum components. The slots that fit around the air horns are hand cut and filed. This was the hardest part of the process. Wish I had a CNC machine in the garage!

The rough air box. Not much room under the bump in the hood. The engine is also offset to the right so the box needs to be asymmetrical. Note that the gaps around the air horns are sealed with adhesive backed closed cell weatherstrip foam. The intake air temp sensor is mounted in the rear of the box. Other seams, etc are sealed with silicon.

Routing 5" snap-lock ductwork and adjustable elbows (aka dryer vent) to the filter below the radiator extractor box. The ducting is sealed with "NP-1" which is an exterior grade duct sealant that remains flexible when set. The flat black paint helps make the ugly ductwork and sealer fade away. The back of the K&N filter is simply bolted to the extractor panel, which happens to lie at the perfect angle. A simple piece of aircraft cable provides additional (and flexible) support for the intake duct.

I haven't driven it yet, there's lots of snow on the ground at the moment but I see no reason why it won't work.

I've been thinking of doing something similar. My $800 Carbon fiber TWM airbox won't fit now that everything is in its final place, so I'm thinking of making a new aluminum base in a similar manner. At least I have the Carbon one to use as a template. I'm still going to try to use the panel filter on top and draw the air from the hole in the top of the hood.

JT,
That's pretty cool; thanks for sharing your design. I'm consistently amazed by how creative folks are with these cars (all FFRs, not just the Coupes).

That is a very good set-up for the injection system jtpayne!! The only thing that I would do different is use some kind of insulation on the bottom and sides of the pan, pipe and make a splash sheild for the bottom of the filter in case of rain!!JMHO hope this idea helps out tpa65cpe!!

Cool idea, I like it.
I saw this one a few years ago for roadsters. I occasionally think of building something like yours, with a remote feed.

BTW, didn't I see your car at Cruise Havanna this year?

I like the function and design, but miss the look of the 8 stacks when you open the hood!

Restrictive.

Amen to John Dol's remark. I guess I'ld suffer the lack of cold air in order to show off those lovely stacks. Wonder what they did on the originals, seems as every photo I've seen show's the stacks.

Not being able to see the stacks is one of the downsides for sure! This is still a rough mock-up. The top comes off with six screws to display the stacks if I park it at a show. How about a sheet of clear plexiglass?
Anyone know where I can get some nice 5" tubing and silicon elbows? Companies like Spectre and AirRaid make nice 4" stuff but nothing in 5".
I have looked at the originals and they built a box like mine around the Webers and cut a hole in the back of the hood to pull air in. I don't think the race cars ran filters. The problem I see with that is that the hot air from the radiator extractor is flowing over the car and obviously being fed to the engine.

That was my car alright. That was shortly after I got it. It is a much different beast now that I've owned if for awhile! This is just one of the many changes I've working on. That cruise was one of the big reasons I decided to do the cold air system, the car really wasn't happy that night due to the warm temps and all the stop and go traffic!
Hope I see you again. You'll be more likely to see me and the car at HPR, PPIR or the fresh new surface at Pueblo!
Cheers

Sweet! I'v been racing with NASA for about 6 years. Loads of fun, and great people. We had a Daytona out there one day a couple of years ago. But I was pretty busy that week end and didn't get a chance to speak with the owner.
What class will you be racing in?

As for keeping the stacks visible, I wish I had pix of a coupe that was for sale in the Pac NW a couple years ago. It had an induction glassed into the bottom of the hood, with what looked like large O rings where it met with the stacks, sealing them to it. It looked quite slick! And when the hood was up, there were those beautiful stacks.
If I can find them on the home PC, I'll post.

That would be the way to get the best of both worlds!

Oh that's nice! My fabrication skills need to improve some. That's the beauty of these things, they're never really "done". It's the journey, not the destination!

Wow! Wow! Wow! Thats all I can say. Gorgeous. If I could afford it I would have Webers on it with a system like the one pictured. For now I got to get it on the road this spring / early summer and am concentrating on that as I am at about the 80% mark. Well one can certainly dream.
