View Full Version : Charcoal canister on tank vent

I'm nearing the initial firing of my engine, which means I'll need fuel. Thus far all the "noxious odors" my wife has been whining about coming from the garage have been minimal (save for the differential rebuild and limited slip clutches swap), but now that I'll have fuel in the tank I've been wondering about how to go about keeping the air venting out the fuel tank smelling tolerable.
If anyone else has crossed this issue, how have you overcome it?
Thank you.

I make a canister using PVC pipe fittings, and fish aquarium activated charcoal. It’s been documented and copied here several times—-I’ll see if I can find the photos.
Edit—-Found it!
Pictorial of my homebrewed charcoal cannister constructed using barbed fittings, PVC pipe & bushings, a couple of discs cut from loosely woven Scotchbrite and a mesh bagged aquarium filter cartrige:

Egchewy79 did a version of Jeff's charcoal canister mod shown above but used one of the brake reservoir canisters that came with the kit that he was not planning on using in his build. Since many people purchase better reservoirs the ones that come with the kit are often discarded. There is a thread on this forum where he shows a picture of it. I'm sure you can find it with a google search.

I purchased on online. If you are interested, I'll look back and see from where. It is pretty much the same thing, but made of black billet aluminum. It wasn't cheap, then I saw that my coyote came with one. Had no idea there was an "efi" instruction manual until after I did that portion of the build.

Can we all start calling you "The Godfather" around here? This is amazing, exactly what will work. Thank you.

My time is worth more than a bunch of lawn sprinkler parts and the labor to cobble it together. I use the one that came with these cars (donors anyways).

If you use an inline discriminator valve in the vent line it keeps fuel from coming out of the vent line during hard cornering on a full tank (if you drive hard or on track this is a real problem), and it also keeps fumes out of the garage. Its spring loaded to prevent fuel and fume escape unless there is enough pressure built up. No charcoal on my build and no fumes in the garage whatsoever

+1 for the PVC canister.
I did the same, and have never really had any bad fuel smells in my garage.

Thank you everyone for confirming this will keep my wife off my backside about gas fumes. She's got a nose like a bloodhound.

The only reason I remembered it was because at the time I was pissed I didn't think of it! :)

Just plumbed a house. Just wait until you see current PVC prices. How about this?

Or this even cheaper and higher capacity.

I used a cheap aluminum inline fuel filter from Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/Bulkhead-Adapters-Fittings-Mounting-Gasoline/dp/B07VDXFKQM/ref=sr_1_17_sspa?crid=3MQZZ6BI0MZLH&keywords=8%2Ban%2Binline%2Bfuel%2Bfilter&qid=1684887013&sprefix=8%2Ban%2Binline%2Bfuel%2Bfilter%2Caps%2C12 8&sr=8-17-spons&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEzU0o0SUROQVpJRDNPJ mVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwMTQ3NDY0T1RUUUZEMVlSOEU2JmVuY3J 5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QTA0MDI4NzYzNkZUTU9VWlIzUDVKJndpZGdld E5hbWU9c3BfbXRmJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm9 0TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ&th=1) and removed the filter and packed it with charcoal. It came with an aluminum mounting bracket that makes it easy to remove when I need to replace the charcoal. Works great, no fuel smell.

Some great ideas coming out of this thread. I'm glad I piped up. First I did a search and the pickins were slim, and old.

This was my plan, when I get a car...:(

somebody said what I was thinking. Ethanol is a wonderful smell to have in the garage.

Add a third one to the club.
I started with this, figuring that vapors would have a hard time being lighter than air to get to the top of the loop, then turning heavier than air to go down and get out. I didn't smell a thing, and didn't get any complaints from the Chief Olfactory Officer, either.

I didn't want spiders crawling into my gas tank, though, so I added a breather filter. Done.

I used a donor car for my build. Since it had all the parts needed already, I used the stock Mustang vapour recovery system. The only change I made, because the stock fuel injection system wasn’t used, was to connect the purge valve to be activated when the brake lights come on.

I never had a problem but there are a lot of people who do. Just depends on one's (or one's wife's) nose. I have for decades used a kerosene tube heater in the winter in the garage. Several friends have to use electric only because wife smell's kerosene fumes. We have also for decades used a ventless propane heater on the wall to give us some nice radiant heat in the living room in the evenings. Some people can't do that.
