View Full Version : Hydraulic clutch identification

I just acquired a nice Mk 4, but am confused as to the clutch linkage I have. I looking at various systems from forum vendors, I do not see any linkage to the clutch fork like mine. I read I should have a bit of looseness in the linkage. Mine is firm, so not sure if my throw out bearing is getting wear. I may be out of adjustment threads, and the ball type of attachment may not pivot like it should.
Any comments.

The clutch doesn't seem to release all the way, as I get a slight grind in some shifts. Not sure if it is an adjustment problem, but the clutch shaft has no play already.

I too like some slack in the clutch fork. It lets the throw out bearing clear the pressure plate. It sounds like you need more travel out of the slave cylinder piston.
If you have any slack in the clutch master cylinder push rod, you might adjust it out and get a little more slave cylinder travel.
It is a dicey adjustment, too much hyd pressure/volume from the master cylinder might push the piston out of the slave cyl.
Have you done any adjusting?

Not really. I may be out of thread to give more throw, and if I shorten up throw to get slack, I lose throw to release. So, i am at a loss. If I use the fitting shown on clutch forks used by Mike Fortes, will that help anything?

The pushrod should have as little slop as possible. Ford designed the bearing to spin all the time. Less damage because it doesn't have to spool up every time you push the clutch. I saw that same setup on an engine I purchased for a customer. It came from The Engine Factory.

If you look to see how an auto adjuster works on the stock pedal box, it always has tension on the cable.
