View Full Version : Any DMV (DC/MD/VA) area owners willing to let a big guy sit in their car?

I’m a “more substantial” guy in that I’m 6’2” and about 300 lbs.

I wondered if there are any owners out there who are local to the DC area (I live in Frederick county, MD) who wouldn’t mind letting me come see their car and try sitting in it. (Maybe my 11yo too because he’s so incredibly car focused.)

I just want to make sure I fit in it and am not going to get stuck like I did when I tried a Lotus Elise.

Also, any thoughts on what I can change to make the build work better for persons of size would be great!

Thank you,
Kevin

Hi Kevin,
I live in Waldorf, have a 3.1 non donor and your more than welcome to give my ride a test fit. Just so you know I am 6-4 and 335, its tight but I drive it pretty much every nice weekend.
If you want to meet up somewhere I would be glad to or you can just take my word on it.
I was planning to do the car show in Alexandria this Sunday, but am backing out.
PM me to see if we can meet up.

Can't help you with a test sit (unless you come to Indiana!) but understand that seats make a world of difference. For example, you won't fit the same in a car with the classic roadster seats as you will in one that has Kirkey lowbacks or Sube Clubmans, etc.

If you are building it yourself you should have no worries. I am 6'2" and weight 290lbs and fit just fine with the standard roadster seat. Other cars might throw you off as they may have used risers or moved the seat closer. Below is photographic proof that a big guy fits without much worry.

The only thing is getting in and out is not done like a normal car, you got to step in and slide down. Also you need to accept that your left arm will usually sit on the door. Not very comfortable anywhere else.

Jeff is right on that. I feel like the kirkey lowback vintage seat gives me the best fit. They can be order with a 16 - 18" width. Also work in the footbox will have big dividends. I'm right your size and people are sometimes surprised when I climb out. You build it to fit you, but everyone's body type isn't the same.

I'm kind of the same size (down to 251 at my last physical!). Two issues for me - the seat and the feet. Seat was solved by an 18 inch wide Kirkey pro drag seat. This was mounted directly to the Breeze seat mount on the floor as far back as possible. Feet (13 W) required I expand the foot box and build a dead pedal. I fit real well now. You can make it work, but you won't fit in every cobra.

Suggestions on foot box expansion?
Edit: never mind. Kleiner has a really good write up if you search the forum
