Am I crazy? Does the 302 come in a combination with non-adjustable rocker arms?
My buddy stopped in just now, and his BluePrint Engines 347. An older one with cast-iron heads.. has started making a lifter tick sound on the drivers side.
It's a flat tappet, hydraulic lifter setup. With OEM ford rockers. The heads I think are even OEM ford heads. The casting under the valve cover has a "4H25" marking.
Anyway.. I pulled off the valve cover, thinking I would at least be able to re-lash them all.
But.. the rocker nuts don't move! Granted, by bulk of my experience is with modern roller 302s. So, this caught me off guard to not find any way to adjust the rockers.
When I swapped in my E303 into my 302, and installed upgraded springs on my GT40p heads, it was a while back, but I don't remember any oddity with setting lash.
so..
am I crazy?
Are these truly non-adjustable rockers? Or.. are they shimmed or something? How is lash set? Is it literally 100% done by the hydraulic lifter?
that sure seems crazy to me.
or.. am I just missing something painfully obvious here.
also
I called BPE , and talked to a Tech for a few minutes, Just to get some insight, and confirm the cam and tappet combination.
He was suggesting I check the lash on the noisy one. When I told him they are not adjustable, he said "not possible".
I agreed, it should be, but I"m tell you .. these rockers don't move!

Those are stock rockers on stock studs, on stock heads. Ford made them that way. For any kind of performance work, they get swapped out for screw in studs and adjustable rockers.

That would make me doubt that it is in fact a 347.

Also, I don't know you that well. You could actually be crazy. ;)

I can confirm.. that I AM crazy! ;)

It is a BPE engine though. Still have the original receipt, and the serial# on the side of the block.
They (bpe) just don't make this combo of 347 any more.

Guess I need to look into these screw-in-studs you speak of.
I'm betting we need to remove the heads, and have the pedestals machined for this to install right?
At which point.. might as well just swap in some real heads.

Yes, you have to remove the heads machine the pedestals, tap the holes, etc. And then you're still left with the stock cast iron heads.
I wouldn't waste the time and money on all that. I would just buy a good set of aftermarket alum heads, and swap them out in one day.

Stock rockers call for 17-23ft lbs. Non adjustable as far as you setting the valve lash but maybe a nut came loose? Loosen all of them off, retorque them and see what happens.

If you are running a flat tappet, you need to insure the oil has phosphorous and zinc additives. A lot of full syn oils do not have these additives, due to newer engines roller tappets do not need the high load lubricant qualities of P & Z.
