I didn't see anyone post this yet. I saw AC unveiled the new Cobra GT Roadster.

Thoughts?
Would like to see the price tag on it and how much it weighs in at. Looks to be one well engineered machine and I am sure they will sell a lot of them. Considering a Backdraft/Superformance is now around $130-150k I am sure these will push the price point even further north. This company definitely went all in with the R&D of it.

Looks like they're giving Ford the big F.U. using the name Cobra on this one.

IIRC, the original AC Car Company would call the cars they sold in Europe AC Cobras. In the US they were called Shelby Cobras. Other than the fact that they had Ford engines in them, Ford has no claim to the Cobra name. I have no idea if the AC Car Company in it's current incarnation has any ownership of any of the old names of the original company but I'll assume their lawyers have done some due diligence before putting that name on the car.

Here's an article from 22 years ago, back when the lawsuits were fresh:
https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-2001-sep-12-hw-44816-story.html
I'm under the impression this is why FFR, Superformance, etc... can't call these replicas "Cobras".

That makes me feel like I built my car for next to nothing  $400k is crazy. I even have a better power to weight ratio!

Reads like good news. A $400,000 Cobra should suck up the prices of Superformance and Backdraft. This will pull the FFR prices up. Two recent FFR's on BAT did high $70K & mid $60K. An old (2002) Superformance sold for $81,700 today at BOT.
Hagerty must like it. My agreed value is up to $55,000 along with my premium payment.

Forgetting the price I like a lot of it. I can't afford a Ferrari or high end Porsche but I can still like them. Not a fan of the headlights or the dash or the wheels but they got a lot right. I hope they can make a go of it and keep the company rolling.

I notice that there is no mention of where they intend to sell it or of emission and safety regulations compliance. I can't see it being imported to the States unless it's done like SPF and BDR and is brought in as an unpowered roller.

They only plan to make about 250 a year, so most in the world won't know they exist unless you are a true enthusiast. My car just sold for $77K locally. Great price but I think it's more around the current economy, which is still garbage. Most new car lots are still anemic, and 8-12 month wait lists are still very much the norm. Older buyers that have the means are still willing to part with their money in lieu of time.
I agree though. They didn't change the bloodline too much, which is great. If they would get rid of that carbon body, they could shed quite a bit of the price as well.

While I think it is a very nice modern interpretation of the original car, it just doesn't do it for me.
It's like the Rebodied Corvettes that are being done by CRC Coachworks Retrovettes:
https://www.crcoachworks.com/1961-62-crc-retro-corvette
This new Cobra really reminds me of the CRC cars.
I wish I liked them but I don't.
It looks nice but it's about 7 times the cost of the one I built in my garage and I doubt it will be 7 times the fun.

I'm not sure I could bring myself to drive a car I paid $400K for out and about like I do with the one I built.
I'd have to rent a large safe deposit box for it to reside in ...

Did you always intend to sell or was it the price was right? Gonna build another?

You really think a fiberglass body would change the price much? Save what $5-10,000 on 400K vehicle?

I can guarantee most of the cost of car is R&D and capital equipment not the body. They have been teasing this for awhile now plus they are in a brand new production facility. If they are only selling 250 cars a year that is what is driving the cost.

It already weighs 3100 lbs, they dont have the weight to spare to get rid of the carbon fiber body

IMHO, suggesting that a fiberglass body instead of CF could cut the cost of the car completely misses the point of the car. This is clearly a low-volume, high-margin car for a very specific demographic. They're trying to maximize profit on every car since they're only making 250 of them. The target audience for this car doesn't want to buy a fiberglass-bodied car and certainly won't pay $400K for one. A CF bodied car however... well, that's cool! :p (translation: they can charge a lot more for that). The customer for this is the same customer that pays $600K for a Ford GT so they can put 60 miles on it in 3 years and then resell it at auction for over $1M. It's not enough to have the money to buy a car like this, you typically have to be a CEO, celebrity or social media influencer and "know someone" to be able to buy one. It's all about generating maximum buzz, and the more insane the price tag, the more buzz.

Ford owns the name Cobra in the US. AC Cars owns it in the UK.
For $400K either an aluminum or CF body would be expected. It's not a price point car, so they won't be trying to save a few bucks.

James Bond parachutes out of a burning stealth bomber with skies on and a machine gun in each hand after shooting a MIG down by firing a 9mm out of the window. His parachute deploys. The villain that was shot down comes swooping by, Samurai sword in hand and cuts Bond's parachute to shreds. Bond goes into free fall and turns himself into a human missile hurtling at breakneck speed towards Ivan. He swoops by, ripping the parachute off of Ivan's unsuspecting back. He quickly straps up just in time to to deploy the chute and land on an Olympic ski slope. He hurtles down the slope and goes into a perfect jump. He blasts the machine guns that propel him off the the ski slope and over the parking lot. Just before landing he kicks the skis off and lands in the waiting AC Cobra GT. He fires the engine up with a fiery roar. He jams the shifter into first....and stalls. He fires the engine again.....and stalls. Ivan falls from the sky and lands on Bonds head breaking his neck. The End.

Lets forget about the price of admission, cost is subjective. I simply don't like the overall design. Original theme was clearly followed, but it doesn't look good to me. Some modern bits thrown at it, but as a package it looks meh.

It's an interesting interpretation of the original design.
I'm not a fan of the stretched wheelbase on this model or any of the other replicas which have longer wheelbases. The proportions just look odd to me - like a stretch limo. Same goes for the retrovettes GoDadGo referenced.
I agree the CF body is all about marketing to their targeted buyers.

Yeah, the stretched look is not quite right. I do think it's possible to scale up a design such that it still looks "correct" but this isn't it. This would actually be one of my wishes if FFR ever did a "MkV". I'm only 6'0" 170# and the cockpit (and especially the drivers footbox) are TIGHT for me to the point that I can only drive the car wearing certain shoes (size 13 shoes don't help).

The Mk5 will be 90” wheelbase. Formacars is building modified Mk4s with a 6” stretch, all it in the cockpit, right through the doors.

With the US safety requirements, I don't see how that car would ever make it to the US in that form. Bumpers alone would make it look like a 1978 280Z. :-)
Hoooper
05-31-2023, 12:33 PM
Given its significant weight I dont see why it couldnt meet crash safety. It would be pretty sad if it has all that extra weight and it still cant meet crash safety. The bumper thing has been over since the early 90s, the "bumper" could be a bumper guard that runs the full width of the car behind the grille and fascia. I dont think there is a single car on the market currently that meets the bumper regulation with the actual fascia, they all have a bumper guard hidden behind the fascia that provides the actual compliance.

Nowadays, European (particularly German) safety requirements are far more stringent than US standards. If this thing can be sold in Europe, it's almost certain it can be sold in the US.
