I just installed my headlight switch and found that when I pull it out to turn the lights on, the knob and shaft pull completely out of the switch body. It goes back in, but pulls out every time I try to turn the lights on. If I'm careful, I can get it to stay in, but this can't be right.
Is there anyway of locking that in place?

Might need to get a new one. I had a few like that and could never get them to stay in. One thing to try first though. try making the groove on the shaft a little deeper. there is a little tab in the switch that goes in that groove to lock it in place.

Thanks Mike.
I'll give it a try.

The opposite is more common, where people will install the shaft and then can't get it back out. Here's a video that Ron Francis made explaining how to troubleshoot the shaft alignment. It may also be helpful in your case:

Try pushing the spring loaded release tab a few times then reinsert the shaft. I’ve had them kind of hang and not return fully so they fail engage as they should.
