Folks,

Sadly with the passing of Russ, are the alternatives out there that we should consider? I had hoped to pick up one of his adapters.

Thanks,
Dan

Real sad to hear of his passing. I phoned him up a few months ago to mention I'd like to buy one of his systems. He was really friendly and helpful. He said to call him back when I got my kit delivered... :(

My backup plan is to find or mimic the old AC turn signal system...I'm sure some enterprising forum member will step up with another option :)

This is what I run on SLTHRR N.

Haven't been to the pick and pull lately but I used to always score one of two of them.

I used a Signal Dynamics electronic turn signal module (self-cancelling). With small buttons mounted on the steering wheel. A simple solution that seems to work well for me.

RT was holding a turn signal and a gas pedal for me. I don't feel right asking his family about it, so I am also looking for an alternative to the turn signal as well as the gas pedal.

I found this, which looks very similar to what Russ' switch looked like. I can't vouch for the vendor.

IIRC, Russ' switch used a 1966-67 VW Beetle switch as its basis, like this one (https://www.jbugs.com/product/141953517F.html?utm_content=shopping&gclid=CjwKCAjwue6hBhBVEiwA9YTx8L5FEaUcpSlkZwKSdCbL KiS2pFNK_s3Xhek41Q9XPFKbqzvignFpRhoCEDYQAvD_BwE). He would then cut off the arm and add the chrome arm with momentary button and do a few other small mods to it. He would also machine the FFR steering wheel hub to work with the self-canceling system of the turn signal switch.

That looks just like the part from speedway motors but much more expensive.

I was looking at that for my car, not sure yet how much work it would be to adapt it.

Good find. I wonder if the column it's designed for can be adapted to the Roadster?

A while back, before I got these modules into "production ready" state, I had talked to Russ on the phone for some time. Discussing the idea that we might be able to combine his turn signal mechanical components, and my electronics components into one item.
Really sad to see him pass on.

Same as Gatorguy ... Signal Dynamics Module paired with Momentary Switches mounted on the dash at the edge of the steering wheel on each side. My hands are on the wheel and I can activate right turn or left turn signal.

FYI, I work for Speedway Motors and wrote the product copy on that turn signal kit. That is why there is copy on the product page instructing how to wire the momentary for the high beam relay. I even spoke with Russ about the wiring a bit when the product was in development. We designed those to work on our fixed non-tilt hot rod columns as a bolt on solution for turn signals (most users of those columns are T-buckets and the like and had no signals, a dash toggle, or one of those old chrome clamp on units which usually got in the way of getting in and out of the vehicle. The turn signal switch is stock VW, we do not modify it at all. We simply machine the adapter to work with our columns. Is it a starting point? Yes. Will it bolt directly to the FFR steering wheel hub? No.

HTH!

Hey Skidd,

Looks like the domain in your link is dead. "ludicrous-speed.com" is up for auction on GoDaddy.
Any other place to buy the HotRodBlinkin?

I'm really saddened by the passing of Russ and what his family is dealing with right now. They have set up a GoFundMe page that @Fman posted earlier, but here is the direct link for quick reference: https://gofund.me/f763d2e3

Although now is a time to grieve and pay respect, given the family's immediate financial needs, I wonder if one or more of our other vendors might want to help by buying the "rights" to some of the products that Russ offered our community. It would be a win-win for Russ' family and the community in my opinion.

That's a great idea Dave. It seems like FFR would be in a good position to do this for at least a few of Russ' products and add them to their options catalog.

I have the same unit. I actually am making some changes. First, when I drive the car bounces and I sometimes double tap the button. I also find that I spend a lot of time making sure my signals are on long enough. I am going to pull out the module and put the relay back in. I am then changing the buttons to the locking type instead of momentary. Push in for the signal and push again to cancel.

I was thinking either FFR or Mark Reynolds (Breeze) would be good options to continue Russ's products and legacy.

Wow!
Major oversight.
I'd not been getting my renewals.
Old email address.
I'll get this fixed ASAP.

I used this with a toggle switch mounted horizontally for left/right…..next to it I installed another toggle vertically for my hi-beam/lo-beam

What's the advantage of installing the Signal Dynamics unit with a toggle switch vs. just using a toggle switch? Does it still self-cancel?

MisterAdam

The module is self cancelling. The momentary toggle of held for 1 second blinker blinks for 7, hold for 2 it blinks for 20, 4 for 75

Toggle switch you have to activate and remember to shut it off…….you don’t want to be “that guy” driving around for miles with a direction on

Got it -- didn't realize your toggle was a momentary toggle. I was using one of the SDC modules on my car for a while before retrofitting the Russ Thompson setup.

I'm not trying to make an off color plug for myself. I had been talking to Russ about selling my part with his. I never wanted to make the whole system because he was already doing it. On top of that he was honestly working too cheap. Russ told me he wanted to offer my quick release, but I bought a plane and it sucked up my time.We talked about that too, such a nice guy.

Richard Oben at North Racecars made a TS kit that also used a VW TS as a basis.

I have one on my car, but I do not know if he still has his TS kit in production.

Give him a phone call to find out .

Microflex, a vendor on this forum, has a simple solution that looks great. Super low profile, self canceling using motion sensors, simplified wiring eliminates the flashers and rear trailer lights combiner. They offer a steering column for the roadster and column mounted switch.
