Going to attempt 1st start at some point today hopefully. I’m wondering what does everyone do about the gas filler tube? Like how are they closing it? Currently I have it taped up like most. Can I fill the tank a little and tape it back up?182956

I did. However, I did learn not to put in more gas than you'll need to test it. This helps avoid having to drain the tank if there's an issue during testing, (or gallons dripping out onto your garage floor). Also, you won't have a lot of gas getting old while you complete other build activities.

+2 on the painter's tape. I go-karted for a month or two like that, using gas in 1-gallon increments.

The nestle coffee mate coffee creamer cap fits over the pipe with a nice fit

just be careful of what type of plastic or rubber recommendations, gas fumes can eat stuff pretty quickly - recommend aluminum foil in between a cap and the tank

Thanks everyone for all the responses! Tape worked fine for now, but I’m loving this nestle lid idea haha.

I use a heavy duty zip-lock style bag and a strip of duct tape. I find the Gorilla brand about the best. Has worked for me and the gas fumes don't seem to break down the bag. Agree about not have too much gas in the tank at first just in case. But you need enough especially if using an in-tank pump. I don't add gas until ready for first start and don't plan (on purpose...) to remove the tank or lines any more. Put some Stabil in the gas and it should be OK for a long time. Plus when you're ready to drive you'll have plenty of room to add some fresh gas. Another subject not to overthink. :p

Another option... you can pick up one of these at the Big Orange or blue... I used this cap for about 5 months in go kart and had no issues, seemed to do a good job with eliminating fumes and was cheap. One recommendation is to add fuel stabilizer when you first fill (I use Sta-bil 360), you could be in go-kart and not drive the car as much as you think. In CA our gas can go bad in a few weeks, so I add it every time I put fuel in the car.

Or you could use the hose and lemans cap supplied. Here is what I did on my MK4 back in 2013.

Or an aluminum soda can over the filler hose for something less subjective to fuel fumes. 183024
