Overspray Using Truck Bed Liner as an Undercoat

All. Just about to spray the underside of my roadster with the Raptor brand bed liner and curious on how much overspray I should be prepared for.

Cover every inch of the body that you don’t want it on…once it’s there it’s there to stay. As for overspray in the area where you are spraying it’s not too bad but I still tarp the floor.

You can sometimes remove paint splatter from road striping using WD-40, not sure if that would get the bed liner off if you got a little splatter here and there.

That’ll work for petroleum based products like rubberized undercoating but Juddster specifically asked about Raptor which can only be removed with lacquer thinner, MEK or sandpaper. Those 3 things also remove paint which is why I said to cover everything that you don’t want it on!

Not to hijack, but we're talking masking for spray. Even if brushing or rolling on, still HOW/WHERE to mask is a legit question for the OP

In the attached crude cartoon of a body cross section, the gray is the glass, red is gelcoat, black is proposed maskant.

for a rounded edge, how much coverage should we expect a painter to reach around the rounded edge? Should we mask the entire rolled edge, and the painter covers it? mask to the "peak" of the rounded edge? Stay away entirely and mask off onto the backside by a healthy margin?

I'm trying to avoid a gap in coverage while at the same time not creating a mess for the painter.

Using production cars as guiding examples I'd say any of the surfaces that you can see directly should have the same finish. To me this means "lip" on any of the panels, maybe extending slightly beyond that.

Which brings another question (and also sorry for the hijack), is there merit to spraying the undercoat before paint?

Before you apply bedliner of any kind, check with your body/paint guy! Most will tell you to keep away from any part of the body that will be worked while doing body/paint as it is going to make more work for them to remove the bedliner towork those areas. Jeff Kleier asked me not to apply bedliner within a couple of inches of the wheel well edges as he works those specifically.

I would also recommend using the more expensive gun if spraying. I used the cheap one that came with the kit and it did not come out real consistent and got overspray everywhere.
