View Full Version : Motorcraft YCC551 A/C Compressor.... does it have all the oil installed?

I've done a lot of research and I'm finding conflicting information/reports.

On the Ford Motorcraft YCC551 A/C Compressor supplied by Factory Five with the A/C kit for the Coyote engine (with NO paper work I might add) does it already included the needed PAG 100 A/C compressor oil? I can tip it and do see the oil, but is it complete full to the amount needed? What it the amount needed? How do I check if it's full or I need to add more? The Factory Five A/C '33 and '35 Hot Rod and truck (respectively) install manual says the first can of 12oz 134a freon needs to have the oil in it..... however, since the compressor at least has "some" or "all" the oil, I don't want to over fill it either.

Any help much appreciated.

Thx Mark

The only way to be sure is to drain it out into a marked container and see how much there is. Compressors have a drain plug for this. Add the proper amount of NEW oil. A Ford dealer tech should be able to tell you if you need to add oil or not and how much. The oil it says to put in on the first charge is for the rest of the system. Some hangs out in the accumulator/dryer. You have to slowly turn the compressor by hand to get it all in. Slowly poor it into the bigger port which is the suction side. There are tech sheets on Ford parts websites for some stuff. That's where I found the instructions on rear diff assembly and torque values.

MasterTech5.... thanks for this info. The compressor did not come with any spec sheet to tell me how much oil the compressor has. Do you have any links to sites that might show me?

Below is a pic of the decal on the compressor..... can you tell how much oil the compressor should have? And based on the decal, I assume it's PAG (PG) 100 ZXL? I see 120 cm3..... if this is the oil amount, using a conversion table I googled, that equals 4.05768 ozs.

Lastly, you mentioned a drain plug. Other than the high pressure out and the low pressure suction ports, the only other bolt (plug?) the compressor has in seen in the picture at the 3 O'clock position (to the right of the yellow paint dot) on the compressor.... do you think this is a drain plug? Or can I remove the high and low port plugs and drain from there?

I also assume if I put oil direct into the compressor, and of the correct amount, I only then use 100% straight 134a freon? Would you agree?

Thx again, Mark

It would appear you are correct as far as the amount and weight of the oil by what I'm seeing on the label. The plug appears to be that seeing its the only other thing other than the high and low ports, but it you have a Ford dealer near you, I would take the compressor there and ask all your pertinent questions. I was a GM Tech and don't ever remember replacing a Ford compressor, even with 10 years at a tire/repair shop toward the end of my working days. Plenty of Honda ones though. They always came with specific instructions on what to do. Do a search on YouTube for replacing a coyote compressor. There are lots of people showing how to do all kinds of stuff. It may already have the correct amount already in it. At least call a Ford dealer and ask if you can talk to an AC tech.

One last question..... given this is a new system, e.g,. dryer, condenser, evaporator, etc. the only oil I'd need is what in the compressor.... correct?

thx again, Mark

No. As I said in the first post, you need to add the one 134a with oil charge also because it is a new system. The oil in the compressor will spread out in the system and leave the compressor with a low oil condition. there is a sight glass on the top of the dryer. Watch it with a light. As you're filling the system, you will see bubbles. When the bubbles disappear wait a few seconds and then close the valve on the can or gauge set and it's full. Only charge through the low side. Only a shop machine can charge through the high side service port. Good luck!
