I've done a lot of research and I'm finding conflicting information/reports.

On the Ford Motorcraft YCC551 A/C Compressor supplied by Factory Five with the A/C kit for the Coyote engine (with NO paper work I might add) does it already included the needed PAG 100 A/C compressor oil? I can tip it and do see the oil, but is it complete full to the amount needed? What it the amount needed? How do I check if it's full or I need to add more? The Factory Five A/C '33 and '35 Hot Rod and truck (respectively) install manual says the first can of 12oz 134a freon needs to have the oil in it..... however, since the compressor at least has "some" or "all" the oil, I don't want to over fill it either.

Any help much appreciated.

Thx Mark

Motorcraft YCC551 A/C Compressor.... does it have all the oil installed?

Mark,

I'm running into a similar issue -- this is what happens when parts come from different places and we become the "system integrators." In my case, the engine is from Blueprint, but the shiny stuff on the front is from March, who supplied the compressor (a Sanden or Sanden clone since there's no markings on it) to Blueprint who installed it on my SBC. Vintage Air supplied the rest of my kit's A/C stuff. As for guidance, the FF manual I have (rev. Q) says "Charge the system and check for leaks." That's it, except for a photo showing three 12oz cans of R134a refrigerant, one of which says "first charge" meaning it has oil in it. The required amount of R134a is probably NOT exactly 36 ounces (3 full cans).

My dilemma: Blueprint says "We ship our engines with no fluids in them, so you need to put oil in the compressor." March says "All our compressors come with oil in them" and there is a tag from March to that effect. The Sanden site indicates their compressors ship with oil. Vintage Air said last fall they were making a video about how to charge an A/C system, but I'm not sure if it will be FFR specific, plus I didn't spot it last time I was on the Vintage Air site. (Not knocking Vintage Air -- they crimped all my hoses and only cost me shipping. Great customer service!)

So, here's the question(s) for all you A/C pros:

1) Do we need a "first charge" with oil in it?

2) Is there such a thing as "too much" oil in the system?

3) What is the system capacity in ounces?

4) What are the target high and low pressures for these systems?

Probably something else I'm forgetting . . .

Mike... I never did get any answers on this. I do know you can have too much oil... that's an easy "google" search. When it come time, I'm just going to drain my new compressor and measure what's in there and add if needed. Just use the correct amount and type of oil per what your compressor calls for. That should be on the compressor sticker. I've attached a pic below to show what my compressor has on it. As you can see, my compressor calls for ZXL 100 PG oil with the amount of 120 cm3..... using a conversion, that's ~4.06 ozs. Sorry I can't be more help.
