View Full Version : Thermo Switch Wire by the Fan?

Hey everyone got another wiring question for ya,

Why does the green thermo switch wire extend all the way to the front where the fan is in the RF Harness? My understanding is that the green wire in the "Sending Units" cluster attaches to the thermo switch which then completes the relay when tripped (around 180 degrees). That relay is attached to the blue fan power wire in the fuse box and then supplies power. So based on this, I will not use the green wire by the fan and just attached the blue and ground wires. Is this understanding correct or am I wrong and missing something?

I am also confused as to why the green wire also goes to the fan? I've heard of people adding in an override switch but even then why would the green wire need to go all the way to the fan?

Thanks!

It's because the harness is used in more than one model of Factory 5. The 33 Hot Rod and 35 Hot Rod truck use a sensor that screws into the radiator. Cap it off and forget it for the Roadster.

It gives you the option of installing a thermostatic switch in the radiator.

Thanks, thought I was missing something.

just debated this "again" last night with my son, we did a full circuit test and deemed the green Thermo Switch Wire is not used at the front in the roadster...

I wish I would have documented more of this to be honest, there is a lot wiring that can be removed and FFR/Ron Francis could improve their wiring guide
we did as you have, terminated the green wire in front

It's made pretty clear that there are multiple options in the RF wiring instructions. As I stated up above. this harness is used in multiple platforms of F5R models.

I like what you said above "Cap it off and forget it for the Roadster." that would be really helpful...
for first time builders, like myself, finding an extra wire(s) is like finding extra nuts and bolts, leaving you wondering what did I miss?

Remember, for this specific wire, there isn't any current being passed. It's a ground wire. The worst thing that can happen if it does short is that you'll trigger the fan relay and if power is applied, the fan will turn on.
