View Full Version : FFR heater dimensions?

Seriously looking at the FFR heater (#14816) for my build - but would value dimensions for the "heater core box" ... e.g. the portion of the heater that typically goes inside the firewall and is mounted between the dash and firewall.

Thanks

Lynn

No one at FFR reading or responding to this?

I was sorta under the impression that a posting on the "Ask A Factory Five Tech" section of the Forum would/might/ought to result in one of the FFR Tech's reading and replying .... but apparently my understanding (and expectations) are set too high!

Come on now - someone's gotta have access to dimensions for the heater that's available from FFR .... and is willing to share them with me.

Someone at FFR? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

Thanks (I hope)

Lynn

You know u can get higher btu rated heaters via Jeg's & summit w/dimensions. Say 28,000 btu's versus 13,000 btu's FFr offers, for less! & will do a better job too!. They have been used by many FFR & other builders. do a little looking before u make your choice.

Yes - there are many/several heaters that could be used, and trust me I've looked at LOTS of them. And most are significantly less costly than the available FFR heater ... the Summit heater is approx 1/3 the cost of the FFR heater and puts out lots more heat.

But I also want to install a functional glovebox ...likely one of Alex's 3 inch deep units (the shallower 1 1/2 inch gloves box will only hold registration and not much else!) ... and the deep glovebox and most heaters go in the same space between the dash and firewall. And yes, I'm using the FFMetals firewall forward mod - so I've bit more room to work with between the dash and firewall.

I've mocked up a cardboard 3 inch glovebox and a 4 inch "deep" heater box (heater fan would go on the engine side of the firewall)

and it appears that in order to make it all work, I need to have the heated air outlets come out of the ends (PS and DS) of the heater box .... not out of the "back" (toward the passenger) of the heater box like most available heaters seem to do.

I tracked down and spoke to the manufacturer of the Summit heater (Maradyne) and due to the location of the heater core inside the heater box, you can't just relocate the heated air outlets and expect any sort of reasonable airflow.

I even considered installing the heater on top of the PS footbox and running heated air tubes thru the firewall until I remembered that the windshield wiper motor also mounts to the firewall in that area, and you've got to be able to get to where the windshield mounts to the chassis. So that likely won't work.

I could have a custom (small, thin) heater core made, fab up a custom heater box for between the firewall and dash and try to figure out the airflow internal to the heater box so i can reasonable airflow out of end-mounted outlets - but before "re-inventing THAT wheel", I want to see if the FFR heater might fit .... since it appears to have the desired end mounted air outlets.

Hence my need/desire for some FFR heater dimensions.

Hopefully - someone can help with that information.

Thanks

Lynn

(PS - thank goodness I'm NOT planning on defroster vents as well!)

Lynn - I typically don't reply to "ask a tech" questions, but since they're not responding, here are the measurements you're looking for - as well as a picture of my installed box. The plenum portion (houses the heater core) is roughly 6" d x 6" h x 8" w and allows only about 1" for a "glovebox" when used with a factory firewall. The "firewall forward" mod would give you around 3" total for a glovebox. The picture shows my 1" locking glovebox which is intended only as a place for things like registration, insurance card, and a garage door opener.

Good morning Chris -

Many thanks for your response (in lieu of any response from the FFR guys) regarding approx size of the FFR heater. That information - coupled with the pic of your install - is just what I need.

Thanks again - and best wishes for a Merry Christmas!
