I came across a 8.8" IRS at a good price recently and went for it. I'm going to replace the axle seals and the Trac-Loc clutch pack, as it has about 55,000 on it. So i needed a way to position it for work, and a way to store it until I install it. I grabbed some 2x12 scraps and came up with this. The diff rests on the casting datums pretty securely. I was able to remove the seals and it was pretty stable as I beat and pried around. The smooth bottom allows the 95 pound diff to scoot around pretty easy.

You gonna put an air-tight enclosure on that so the diff fluid doesn't stink up the garage overnight? :P

Double air-tight. That stuff is rank.

I can deal with it. My wife however...

I built a stand (ADAPTOR) for my std 8.8 axle housing. It holds the housing to a engine stand. nuthing but 1 piece od pipe and some angle steel welded together. It holds the housing by 4 cover bolts. (I'm mainly using this for gear set up and painting). I not sure those (4) 5/16 bolts are up to holding the housing With axle shafts and Brakes installed.

For storage I've seen more than a few 9 inch ford centers dropped into 5 gal bucket of kerosene or diesel fuel .

Truth!

After the differential rebuild I pretty much had to sign my life away to get the wife on board with painting the car in the garage.

I popped the cover off of the differential last night. Imagine my surprise when I saw a Torsen unit inside....
The crunched Mustang GT it came out of must have been a Performance Pack car. I scored!

Now I need to return the clutch pack kit to the Ford dealer.

If I use a spray can in the garage my wife wrinkles up her nose in disgust. I cannot imagine painting a complete car.
Women have different ideas about what smells bad.

I have promised her that all transit into and out of the garage will be from the outside through the 3rd stall door, and I will duct tape the seams AND plastic vapor barrier seal the garage access door to prevent fumes from coming in the house.

I also promised her I'll do my best to keep all the stinky business confined to one weekend. From all the paint videos I've watched, it's possible, but I was planning on separating primer work and paint/clear coat work into two separate "events" just to maintain my sanity.

Gear Lube & dog barf... the only two smells that'll give me the heaves.

Well, I have to agree about the smell. That stuff is nasty. And my wife also seems to have a much more sensitive nose than me. :p But I assume everyone knows that's the Motorcraft Additive Friction Modifier XL-3. Not the gear lubricant itself. What's not clear to me is whether it's required for the Torsen version. Doesn't make sense that it does actually, although Ford lists it in the lubrication specs. I have a Torsen center section in my Coupe and added it because I'm typically a slave to the mfg's instructions. But IMO could just as easily be left out of the Torsen version.

The Torsen manufacture say's DO NOT use the friction modifier. I asked when I bought mine.

Interesting. At the time I filled mine 3+ years ago, Ford only referenced the gear lube + modifier for all the Mustang center sections. No differentiation between the clutch type and Torsen. At least everywhere I checked. Never occurred to me to contact Torsen directly. In hindsight, obviously a good idea. Just browsed their website. They have a whole page on the subject: https://torsen.com/tbr-lube-friction-modifier/. Also mentioned in their FQA's. "Do I need to use friction modifier with Torsen? Yes and no. Although the differential does not use a clutch pack design, modifier additive is still sometimes used in OEM applications. In such cases, we suggest referring to the OEM recommendation." In looking at both, seems it's not required but may reduce certain types of noise if you hear it. But also doesn't seem to hurt anything. Also may explain why Ford didn't differentiate in their lubrication specs. I'm not going to drain mine out. But for builders starting new, agree it could be left out.

Right, they didn't say it would cause a problem just not necessary. My memory seemed to imply the DO NOT.

If Ford gives you any grief about restocking, you could probably sell it here.

Nice avater/nick.
