Since a TDI seems to be one of the options, I wonder if the 2.0T + DSG would fit.
I like the idea for my future club-race/auto-x vehicle.

Anything will fit. It just depends on your fab skills.
Frankly, if the TDI and your engine share engine mounts, they'll likely be swappable. But I don't know that much about VWs. However, the MPG car that might have the TDI isn't in development yet. ANd it's not certain that they'll go the TDI route as the GM Ecotech engines are another possibility.

Ive been wondering about this too. Not a huge fan of VW, but the DSG gearbox is pretty impressive. My fantasy is that someone will make a bell housing adapter to mate the DSG gearbox to the suby flat 4. There was a bit of subaru to VW mating in the past for use in old VW busses, so there is somewhat of a precedent...
Fingers crossed.
I've had the same dream. I don't want to give up the boxer rumble, but I'm quite enamored with my MR2's SMT.

My most fervent hope is that Subaru will finally offer a DSG option. This would yield not only a native platform for tuners/modding community to get in with, but factory experience in testing and tuning a DSG for the EJ25.
I know the purist will eschew removing the third pedal, feeling a proper sports car must include a gear level. I'm all for it in a dedicated track car, but with a mixed duty / daily driver, I feel DSG is perfect compliment.

I always just assumed Dual Shift Gearbox, but it's Direct Shift. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Direct-Shift_Gearbox
Cool article, if you're bored. :)

Ford's DSG is called the Powershift and it's already here on the Fiesta and Focus. Ford markets it as an automatic, but it just an automated dual clutch manual.
No FWD based transmission is going to be able to suppost a Subaru motor. The horizontally opposed design makes it very hard to mount with anything but a "traditional" longitudinal layout. If you were to lay it out and try, one of the cylinder banks would need to occupy the spot normally relegated to a FWD differential or halfshaft. Normal "V" or inline motors do not have anything low on the motor to obstruct the diff or halfshaft when transversly mounted.
I don't think Subaru is currently developing a dual clutch manual, as it has poured a ton of R&D into it's CVT program to decent success.

Not sure I'd call this a decent success. It's better than the 4EAT, but that's not saying much. I've read a handful of reviews for the new CVT equipped Impreza, and they haven't been complimentary towards the CVT.
That said, I do agree with you. We probably won't see a Subaru DCT anytime soon.

You're looking at a transmission that weighs almost 150-212lbs MORE than a comparable 5 speed. Sorry but I just don't see that being a good idea in a weight conscious car like this.
