Either R. Button swapped gauges with me or something is way off!

Posting to see if anyone else has seen this.
My Speedhut gauges now show over 677,000 miles!

Has anyone seen something like this?

There's a mode where you can set the odometer to any mileage you like. Install the button by plugging its jack into the back of the meter. With the gauge on, press and hold the button for 2-3 seconds. You should get a menu that lists "Speed Cal" and "About"; this menu may include a set odometer option. Diddle around in the menus until you find the set odometer option & set the miles to whatever you want. If this isn't clear, call Speed Hut tech support & explain the issue; they'll help you navigate to the set odometer function.

Ray, maybe you tested and tuned too much getting ready for the Texas Spring Meet.?.? See you there.

I noticed the "acquiring" satellite message, too. Did these occur at the same time? I wonder if 677782 is a max value that is the default when the GPS can't get a good time sample?

I don't think it's a feature for the odometer to show inaccurate mileage. Speedhut has great customer service and should be able to repair the gauge for you. I'd opt for a repair over replacement given your numbered special edition gauge.

Now about how GPS works...

Each GPS satellite transmits a unique code that repeats every millisecond. The receiver on the ground receives that code and compares it to the code for that satellite to determine how long a delay there is between the two codes. Based on the delay, the receiver can calculate its distance from the satellite. With four satellites, the receiver can perform a trilateration calculation to pinpoint the receiver's location. To calculate speed, the receiver tracks the distance over time.

By the way, my car racked up several hundred miles in a trailer on the way to Jeff Kleiner's when the transporter left the key in the on position after loading my car.

I did find a link with instructions for setting your mileage on the gauge that was mentioned earlier.

The pic was taken in my garage right after I turned on the ignition. That goes away about the time I get to the stop sign at the end of my street. I went to the part store today and it has 3 more miles so it’s not the max.

I’ll call them tomorrow and see what they say. Sounds like I can reset the milage but my concern is how it got jacked up in the first place.

I’ll post if I learn anything useful.

Sounds like someone is setting up an alibi for driving the car a bit too much :p

Sometimes the processor in the gauge goes walk-about. My non-GPS unit decided that it was going to record 6 miles for every 1/10th driven one day. I reset the odometer to my last best recollection, and it's been fine ever since.

My Speedhut GPS speedo also hit 650K miles. When I ordered them from Speedhut, GPS was not even an option. When they were about to ship, they asked if I wanted to upgrade to their brand new released GPS model. I said sure. I love the thing, but mileage was wonky. After it 650K I called them. They asked me to do a few things but nothing worked. They asked me to send it back for repair. I ended up getting a brand new one back (that matched the custom configuration/look that I ordered). They were great to work with. No complaints.

does anyone know how the GPS clock on the speedo works? I just assumed that it pulled info from local GPS and changes the time depending on the time zone you're in, just like my daily driver. Recently, I noticed that my clock is an hour ahead. We spring forward in another week or so, but was wondering if anyone had insights on how these things work.

GPS is all about time and it will boggle your mind. The simple answer is it uses the number of seconds since the epoch. So time is a 32-bit integer. Then, you need to account four leap seconds that have accumulated, like we add a day in February every four years, but on a much less regular scale. There are currently 19 leap seconds in the GPS correction.

As of the second I looked, the current GPS time was 1362338536.

Any idea why my GPS clock isn’t accounting for daylight savings and is an hour off?

I can say it certainly isn't an issue with GPS, but likely firmware in the gauge.
