View Full Version : DS PCV connection at rear of engine?

I was just watching this video on YT of a nicely built Mk4 with a gen1 coyote engine. One thing that caught my eye was that the drivers' side PCV hose seems to be running to the rear of the engine. Is there an acceptable port at the rear of the coyote that the PCV hose could be plugged into, that would not require adding the fitting to the intake elbow? Granted he's running the cobra jet intake - if there is one, is it also present on the gen2 stock intake?

Yea that’s a great build. He can chime in in addition but I know he’s running a dual feed catch can. This comes up a lot. The PCV is just a vent feature. There is a vaccume on the PS port that pulls air thru both heads coming from the DS. Running the line from DS to elbow keeps it a circuit or else you would have a vaccum leak. There are several options to consider. 1 run it stock with vaccum on PS and DS elbow (intake). You can just vent them on both sides to the ambient. Just google PCV vents and you will see what I mean. Coyotes can be oily which is why folks run catch cans. I don’t see why cans on both sides makes sense as the vaccum comes from PS but to each their own.

In order to be legal in CA, I need a closed PCV system. I have the J&L oil separator on the PS side (which I'll probably need to replace with the stock hose for the CA BAR inspection), and on the DS I currently have the hose going to the Spectre intake elbow using a plastic push fitting into a rubber grommet. My issue is that fitting is pretty loose in the grommet and I'm sure it'a vacuum leak. I've tried sealing it up with Permatex black but apparently it moves around enough to keep breaking that seal. So I'm exploring my options. They seem to be:

1) live with it as it is (not sure if it's enough of a vacuum leak to cause tuning issues)
2) find a 1/2" barb bulkhead fitting that I could attach more securely to the Spectre elbow with a nut on the inside, rather than relying on the fit of a plastic fitting pushed into a grommet.
3) Pass CA BAR inspection with this setup, and then replace the DS PCV hose with a push-on breather cap (and replace the Spectre elbow with a new one that doesn't have a hole in it).
4) Find another spot to run the DS PCV hose that works and will pass CA BAR inspection (and replace the Spectre elbow with a new one that doesn't have a hole in it).

Thoughts?

Gotcha. You seem to have it covered. Sealing that rubber insert with RTV or silicone should do the job. I had the sprectre intake but didn't like all the connections (nothing specific just my crazy). I moved to a MRP fitting for MAF sensor and a silicone elbow direct to throttle body. 3 clamps instead of 5. The JLT rubber insert/quick connect works pretty well with no issues. If you had a vacuum leak of impact you will know it with how the engine idles.

Make sure to use 'sensor safe' sealant.
