View Full Version : How does a turkey pan help air intake?

My air cleaner is directly in-line with the hood scoop so air RAMS into it.
Our old forum friend Garage Freak brilliantly made it so his turkey pan seals with the hood. That's swell, but otherwise how does a turkey pan help air intake?
Planning my next build and I'm considering a "nostalgia package" - turkey pan, chrome valve covers, etc., and I was just wondering.

Helps isolate the carb from engine bay heat.

Also... as I have come to find out.... At around 45mph there's enough pressure under the car that air pushes out the hood scoop... not in. So all that heat in the engine bay is going into the air filter and out the hood scoop. The builder of my car built a cold air intake box that uses the right side louver vent. Mine is EFI.
I would imagine a turkey pan that seals to the hood scoop would solve this issue. However, I'm not sure where all that air pressure is going to go..

Without a turkey pan is there any speed that air actually goes in the scoop rather than out the scoop?

In all the miles that I've driven cross county, around town and on race tracks I've never cleaned bugs out of the inside of the hood scoop or off the air cleaner. This might be a fair indicator of how little air goes into the scoop. Now I know the bugs were there by simply looking at the radiator, oil cooler and whole front of the car.

I even tried a turkey pan but just for fun.

The reality is the hood scoop faces the wrong way. The high pressure area is at the base of the windshield. Pan is a heat insulator.

Maybe if you went fast enough in reverse?

Most who dont do the traditional scoop just leave it off entirely. A cowl hood might look OK, hopefully better looking than the super snake hood

I initially had a turkey pan and the small "Snelling & Hellings" air cleaner on my car, but eventually removed them for a couple of reasons. Although the turkey pan does isolate the intake air from the hot engine compartment, the tiny air filter reduces the engine's ability to breath. Plus, I undid the faux big block look (had original big block valve covers on with adapters, etc) and went with a period small block look, which would have been correct for "COB" cars that were made for England and other EU markets - basically the wider 427 body with a 289.
Here are a few pics - the first is what Shelby did on the original cars to seal the turkey pan to the hood; just a simple piece of foam. The others are of my engine compartment before and after.
Oh, as to functionality of the scoop, I regularly have to clean bugs off the air cleaner top, firewall, and where the scoop and hood meet on the underside.
EDITED to add.... One additional pic of my hood opening mods. When doing my bodywork, I glassed in most of the huge hole that was left after cutting off the molded-in scoop (Mk3.1 still had the scoop as part of the outer hood skin). I then reshaped the separate hood that I bought from FFR (they were fiberglass back then, not plastic) and attached it using #6 stainless button head screws to mimic rivets.

agree 100%
Cold air is more dense and contains more oxygen than say warmer air that went though the radiator.

Great thread discussion! I too am planning a turkey pan, but believe I'll make mine custom, as to incorporate a different style "larger" surface air cleaner. I never really thought of it, until following this discussion, but I guess this means I'll have to add some vents in top of the hood itself? I'm not against it and really wasn't going too, but figure if there is a air-flow issue where air is just going out the hood scoop, well, that defeats what I'm trying to do. Not to have wrenches thrown at me, please, but is their any type of hood vents that look cool that anyone knows of? I was thinking some Ford Mustang hood vents, but if anyone knows of something cool and not gaudy and big, please share.
Also, put me down for digging the Green too, Chris! That color is fire! BTW - Nice work on the T-Pan setup. That's very similar to what I want to do on mine.

Those lid filters solve a lot of the discussed issues using the turkey pan and small diameter filters.

I really appreciate the link, Hoooper! I spoke with Shane and will be going with his lid louver set - Thanks!

FWIW - the silver car shown in the first few photos on Shane's site is a local builder. I've seen his car in person and the louvers look great.

Many of the 2000s Spec Racers with the Mustang Air Intake near the fender well did this.
