What is the appropriate size and location for the oil sump? Are there any clearance issues I need to worry about? What are most mk4 owners using?

There's a lot of room down there for just about any width you want to use. Don't go deeper than 7", or it will hang below the frame rails.

When I started my build I called Mike Forte and told him I was building a small block Ford and I planned on using a hydraulic clutch. He sold me a TKX transmission and then put together all of the items I would need to finish my engine along with the master and slave cylinder etc. Check out his website and give him a call.

1+^^
SBF stock pain is about 1/2" too deep. I ended up going with a pan from Kevco that I bought off another forum member. Had to change the oil pick up from front to rear with this change.

This is my build. Recent MK4, delivered last December, with a 1995 Mustang GT engine and trans. Yea I know the oil pan clearly has some previous damage but I banged all the dents out and it holds oil. The hard drive magnet is stuck to the bottom of the passenger frame rail for perspective:

Maybe half the oil pan plug is below the frame rails. I'm gonna run it.

Actual pan varies widely depending on the engine you use. So no general answer. But overall depth max of 7" and not hanging below frame tubes is common for all.

I'm going to be using a small block 427 dart stroker
