I have read that some wait to install the upper steering shaft until later in the build compared to the sequence in the manual. Why wait, and if so, when do you recommend? I don't really care when I put that together, just trying to understand future challenges to avoid.
Thanks

Sure, you can put it in now. Just make sure the fit is correct, e.g. don't hammer it in or whatever. Guys have gotten in trouble because they forced it in. Then it wasn't the right length for later in the build, couldn't get it to move, etc. If it doesn't slide in with any more than token resistance, check for burrs, straightness, rust, etc. There are two special washers (Belleville Washers) in recesses in one end. Those provide the necessary tension. You will do the final adjustment of the length with the dash and steering wheel installed.

Agreed on the forcing, just take your time it will go in.

As edwardb said, make sure it fits properly then, use a rust proofing lubricant and put it together. Do not use spray on stuff like WD-40. When the carrier evaporates, it will glue the parts together.
I see you're in Texas. You should have my favourite product for this kind of thing readily available. Gun oil! It is designed to prevent rust, not evaporate or get sticky.

Ha, you are right that folks love their guns down here.
Thanks all for the feedback, looks like I need to pick up some oil before I slide it together.
