I'd like to mount a small fire extinguisher somewhere in my cockpit within an arm's reach.
Would like to hear what products people have used - both the mount and the extinguisher - and where people have put them.

Just for what it’s worth. I’m a career firefighter and own a business servicing fire extinguishers on my days off from the FD. I don’t recommend kidde brand fire extinguishers. In the last 12 yeast, they have recalled over 50 million extinguishers for various reasons. The extinguishers they sell today use the exact same internal parts. Try to stick with Ansul, Amerex or Buckeye brand fire extinguishers.
If you can afford it, i recommend buying a clean agent fire extinguisher (halon, halotron or clean guard (FE36)). The dry chemical powder will put out a fire effectively, but can be corrosive with moisture and over time will damage electronics and metal. They are much more affordable though. If you ever use a dry chem, clean it up as soon as possible and you’ll be fine. All small extinguishers come with a vehicle bracket. Otherwise you can use Velcro or spring clips. Your best bet is a 5lb extinguisher in the trunk. The little ones are nice in cockpit but don’t last very long. A bigger one in the trunk will be better in the event of a fire and last twice as long.

I used pretty much the same as James. I got a 2 pack and the quick release mount system. The 1st one is in the trunk area but needed an idea of where the second one should go. Seat idea is good but i would say put it on the passenger side due to my seats do slide. Not that I'm going to let anyone else drive my Coupe :)

Here is pic the day i took the Coupe over to James's house. you can see the extinguisher in the back window mounted on the down tube roll cage bar.

Mount it where it is easily reachable from outside the car. If there's a fire, your first goal is to bail out. Been there, done that.

Thank you - that helps to explain the huge price difference between brands and items. I noticed the ones sold at summit racing were quite a bit more - for the reasons you've outlined.

I'm a big fan of AFF type fire suppression systems (IE: race cars, open cockpit cars), but have seen three separate demonstrations for the following and have three on order for some of my cars, Cobra included.

The section of carpet (and underlying AL) where the diagonal roll bar tubes come down mid line behind the seats is a tough place to finish cleanly. I ended up building a couple of finish pieces of aluminum, which I then covered with the same leather used on my dash. That came out okay. And then I mounted my fire extinguisher behind that intersection. The quick release is dab smack in the middle of the roll bar intersection, which is an easy reach, even if one is moving out of the cockpit in haste.

I am counting on not having to pull the pin on any fire extinguisher - Hmmm

Eddie, I have one and plan to use the supplied mount in the open space beneath my seat. At some point I would like to install a proper halon system but for now, I figure the Element would beat a blank. I haven’t personally seen one in action but the video is encouraging. As others have said, I hope to never need it.

Before you buy a Halon system, do your homework, as a Halon system works by starving the fire of fresh air. In an open cockpit car like the Cobra, with a huge amount of air movement through the engine compartment, as well as the passenger compartment, the Halon will not be as effective as you want it to be in order to give you additional time to get free of the car (which is what a fire suppression system is actually for). The AFF systems (water/plant based) are a better tool and investment for the Cobras, real or replica.

I have two nozzles in the cockpit and one over the fuel tank which is temp sensitive.

In thinking about this thread a bit more, a couple more things come to mind.

In all the cars I have owned, I have never had a problem with a fire. I have had a couple of camper-like vehicles where I carried a fire extinguisher as a safeguard against cooking accidents, and there are fire extinguishers in my shop to safeguard against an intersection of wood dust and sparks thrown by metal work. I have used one of those pick-up truck mounted extinguishers to help put out a roadside fire in a VW bus. Not sure why VW's seem to be bulk of burned out hulls one might see on the highways ...

The fact is that a fire suppression system is an after-thought. Maybe in racing where a crash can cause a fire it could come into play, and maybe it is wise, as the odds of a fiery crash increase in racing. What problem are we trying to solve by mounting an extinguisher in a Coupe or Roadster or other hand-built car?

I am guessing what we are mostly concerned about is our own shoddy workmanship, whether it be on fuel lines or electrical shorts. This is not a slam in any way, shape or form.

I mounted a fire extinguisher (as mentioned above) mostly because it seemed to be the thing to do with these projects of ours. I have not mounted one in my Audi or my BMW coupe or any of a number of other cars I have owned. Fashion statement? Maybe. Is it needed? Kinda depends on whether you believe in the quality of work you are doing on fuel line fittings, on addressing brake temperatures, on wiring integrity, your induction system design (i.e.: reversion), ...., etc.

Address the cause, not the cure. At best, if you are pulling the plug on a fire extinguisher, you will spend most of your time afterward thinking about what you may have done differently to prevent a fire. And nursing burns ...

What design rules are you following with your build? Do you know AN fittings, with dissimilar metals? Do you know the consequences of high overlap cams? Just sayin' ...
