View Full Version : Do I need the seat track?

Are the seat tracks just to allow sliding of the seat? I am planning on ordering the inclined seat mounts from breeze.

That’s all they do. Some like them for ease of entry, but you have to balance that with the fact that they will raise you up a bit too. Since no one else drives my car, I didn’t need them, but I do love the Breeze brackets.

I put tracks in a roadster that I built for a customer 11 or 12 years ago. He reports that the seat has not ever been moved. I think they are kind of a waste unless you are absolutely certain that the car will be driven by 2 drivers of significantly different heights.

Thanks everyone I just asked them to delete seat track.

I'm not sure this helps, but this is what I did. It occured to me I only need two positions, one for me and one for my wife. Here's a video of how I got there.

I love the Breeze mounts as well. One of the best features for me about the Breeze mounts is how quickly you can remove the seats. I can have both seats out in under 5-minutes without lifting the car. Its much easier doing any interior work especially under the dash if you remove the seats.178980

Being on the shorter side, I have the breeze mounts with seat racks on top of them; this gives me about an extra inch depending on how I adjust them along with the breeze racks. With both, I can set my height of my seat by moving one or the other. So, if I want my seat lower, I can move the breeze racks forward and the rack backward... and visa versa. I love the slidability getting in and out. Although my car is just in the go-kart stage, I think they will be very beneficial for me.

I feel like that decision is light years away. But, I'm going with the breeze mounts at this point. I'm short, but the breeze mount seems to be about right from just plopping the seats in my far from finished car.

Probably a personal preference thing (as you have already noticed from the replies). I personally wanted them because I tend to really move myself forward when on the track and set it further back when just driving around so they will get used regularly on track/autocross weekends. As for the passenger side - basically useless but I wanted to keep the two seats symetrical. I did read somebody say they liked to have the option to slide the seats forward to vacuum/clean behind the seats - haven't had to put that option to use yet.

Breeze will give you a bit of adjustability as well so if that is sufficient you may be able to forgo the sliders.

I could see a seat track being a selling feature for the car. You never know how tall a prospective buyer may be, and if they can't get comfortable, it may stop a sale.
I bought one but never installed it as I need as much leg room as I could get. If I ever decided to part with the car, I would offer to throw it in if a buyer was concerned.

I'm installing Sparco seat tracks. I expect multiple people to drive the car and I've also had moveable seats in the past. What I found was that when I dropped something in the interior it immediately migrated under the seat to the exact center of the seat. This is a lot like the stuff you drop while building or working on the car. The moveable seat helps to find the stuff. Being able to move the seat also helps when you need to vacuum under the seat after an off-track excursion (agricultural work) minimizing the potential for a Chia Pet growing on the carpet. I do not offer these instances lightly, I've experienced all... multiple times.

Sounds like a moot point now. But I put them in, and would do it again. The seat height is perfect for me (roughly 3/4 inch higher). At 5'8", on faster drives (freeway, highway driving) I do move the seat forward a bit. And I do appreciate the ability to clean behind the seats and retrieve my phone or sun-glasses case.

Side note, I also put in some aluminum 'slats' on the seat structure, to add more support in the seat bottom cushion foam, that probably added another 3/8" or 1/2" height for me.

Any chance of a picture of this?

I made my own "Breeze style" mounts and added the FFR sliders. I'm 6'2" and needed the seat raised and tilted back a bit. The front is raised about 2" and the rear is about 1/2" higher. With the seat all the way back against the wall the pedals are a perfect fit for me, and the wife can still drive it.

Being an old fart 84 I use the sliders on my new seats for getting in & out. That said originally like many my original seats never moved.

'Jim1855' -- I used Sparco tracks, too. I machined some aluminum blocks that gave a slight rise, but also a 7 deg. tilt-up at the front of the seat for more thigh support.
I'm 5' 9" and wife is 5' 6.5" and so I thought the freedom of adjustment might be nice.

If you're doing a Mk5 I'd recommend a slider on the driver's seat. I'm 5'9" and didn't install one in Mk3 or Mk4 builds. Basically mounted the seats as far back as they would go and worked for me. But for the Mk5 I'm working on now, because the cockpit space is larger, all the way back is too far for me. Rather than locking the seat down leaving space behind, I installed a slider. Makes it more versatile and worth the extra effort IMO.

I've been thinking about adding a DS seat track in case my wife wanted to give the car a spin. I'm 6' and she's 5-6. I was also thinking about the Sparco track with maybe a slight angle. Or would it work for both of us if I just installed the seat for my height?

.

'tundra2050' -- I installed my Sparco tracks parallel with the transmission tunnel. This puts them about 7 deg off the car centerline.
That way they "track" with a constant distance from the tunnel.
The seats themselves are square to car's main length & width dimensions.
