View Full Version : Turn Signal Relay Random Clicking When Signals Off

Hello Friends,

Noticed a weird electrical gremlin today. My mk4 is in go-cart and has the RT turn signal hub setup with the push button used for the horn. All seems to work ok except that I have a faint clicking coming from the turn signal relay when the stalk is in neutral and ignition switch is in run position. Its like there is a small amount of electricity getting thru but not enough to make the relay click loudly. I have the latest version using the LED style relays. I have swapped the relay with no change so dont think its a relay issue. I have reached out to Russ and he does not know what would cause this.

Any ideas?

It could be a relay activating. I would start by unplugging the load side of the relay, then the activating lug, etc.
Got to start somewhere. Can you place your hand on the relay, maybe feel the clicking?

The RT turn signal assembly is just a switch. No active components. It would be pretty easy to eliminate it by disconnecting. Electrically would be the same as the turn signal stalk in the neutral (center) position. Did your setup work properly before and this is a change? Or has it been that way from the start? How did you wire the hazard circuit and what switch did you use? That's a common source of problems if not wired exactly like the schematic.

Thanks for the responses!

I did a bit more investigating last evening. I am 100% sure the noise is from the turn signal relay. The noise stops when it is unplugged. I tried swapping the hazard and turn relays. Still made noise, pitch just changed a bit. The noise is more of a rhythmic muffled beep instead of the regular relay click sound. Guessing this may just be from reduced voltage. When the key is turned to ignition and the turn stalk in neutral, the beeping starts and lasts 30 seconds or so until it fades to the point it is barely perceived. With the front marker and taillights temporarily installed all works as it should in all modes (hazard, turn, park, brake and combinations). There are no strange lighting indications when the beeping is happening. Hazard switch is kit provided and wired per schematic. RT turn signal wired in place of kit provided turn toggle. Horn activates with stalk push button. High beams are run through kit provided toggle. I had the fuel pump temporarily unplugged and noticed the beeping, otherwise I probably never would have since the pump is louder than the beeping. I don't think I ever would have noticed this otherwise since all seems to function as it should. I will try disconnecting the RT turn signal switch and temporarily connect the kit provided toggle and see if the sound goes away. Any other ideas?

Thanks!

Well, I can't offer any technical solutions but will offer a wise guy response. With the car running, you'll never be able to hear it!
