View Full Version : Gates PowerGrip clamps on fuel filler hose

I'm not a fan of worm gear clamps and avoid them wherever possible. For nearly all the coolant system hoses I used Gates PowerGrip clamps, and I'm now a big fan of those. Has anyone used these on the rubber hose that goes from the LeMans cap to the steel fuel filler tube? That rubber hose looks like it's quite a bit more rigid than radiator hoses, so I'm wondering if Gates PowerGrip clamps will exert enough clamping force for a safe connection. A possible alternative would be stainless steel t-bolt clamps.

Thoughts?

I’m not familiar with PoweGrip, but it appears you use a heat gun to clamp them down. Having removed my tank twice now I can tell you that access is difficult and a heat gun would be a challenge to get in there. If you make the fender well panel removable that would help. I’ve found that the rubber fuel hose is more difficult to put on than than take off - WD40 will be your friend here. The hose doesn’t need a lot of clamping force, just enough to seal against leaks that are not under pressure. There’s also no pulling force to speak of, so nothing special is needed here and a worm gear clamp works fine.

I agree with Bradly's response. The hose isn't under pressure and needs to be easy to remove down the road. I wouldn't want to be using a heat gun on a fuel system part full of fuel vapor either.

I love PowerGrip clamps, I use them for all my coolant hoses, never a leak. However, not sure I'd use them back there. The red hot heat gun elements near fuel probably isn't a good idea.

I think it actually says not to use on fuel lines.
My alternative to screw clamps are the heavy duty spring clamps from NAPA https://www.napaonline.com/en/search?text=spring%20hose%20clamp&referer=v2

I used them on all my heater hoses and love them. I wouldn't use them on the fuel filler. Between removing the body, removing the tank, or having the replace the filler gasket which is prone to failure, I wouldn't want to be trying to cut off and buy power clamps each time.

Oh, but they make this cool little tool to cut them off , and it saves you from running a razor blade through your radiator.. That one cost me $$$$

I decided to switch my heater control valve from the manual cable drive to the electric 12v one which meant I needed to remove about 6 powerclamps. I bought that fancy $50 tool and was a total waste of money. It was almost impossible to cut through the clamps and when I did get through them the knife still damaged the hose enough I didn’t dare try to reuse it.

Dremel tool with a cutoff wheel, and a little care. They come off with no damage to the hose
