View Full Version : John's 289 FIA Build Thread

After a productive 291 days of doing research and acquiring parts since placing my order, I picked up my 289 FIA kit last Tuesday December 20th with the help of Mike Everson (thanks again for the help Mike!). It went very smooth, and it was nice for my daughter and I to go on a tour during normal business hours. Having a ton of fun so far and having my daughter home from college and wanting to help has been great! I also want to thank the members of this forum and the vendors I have done business with; the information and guidance has been invaluable to a new builder like myself.

Basically, where I'm at currently is the inventory is done, that was interesting. All of the aluminum has been traced and removed. The F-panels have been installed as well as the upper front control arms, ball joints, and the power steering rack. The rearend is installed minus the coil overs due to the spacers not being included in the inventory.

I only have 22 items on the POL, which I thought was pretty good. What is somewhat concerning are the items that are missing that are not listed on the POL or on the Pack List.
I didn't receive the front spindles, hubs, lower control arms, steering arms, the aluminum hood scoop vent/grill for the 289, the drive shaft, and none of the
coil over mounting spacers. These are not listed anywhere. I was also short some of the large washers and a jam nut for the pan hard bars but was able to get those at Ace Hardware.
I know this will get resolved, I sent an email to FFR last Friday. The concerning part is what else am I possibly missing, and I may not know that I am until I get to a specific part of the build. Flipping through the manual while doing the inventory helped some. I also received aluminum for the 427, which I know many pieces are shared, but I didn't receive the 289 specific pieces like the splash guards and hood scoop vent.

I am glad they updated the manual to include the hardware type as it related to the hardware pack.

Below are my choices for the build so far, like most 289 builders it will be pretty traditional, think guardsman blue 289 street car with an FIA option package.

Nice set up. Welcome to the 289 Club.

Thank you! I just subscribed to your thread, build looks great. Did you have any issues getting the body off? I know they are narrower than the 427 but the back was tucked under so far I had to bend the aluminum to get it off. Never thought of the Russ Thompson directional possibly causing an issue with the dash, something else to add to the list.

Thank you.

We didn’t have to bend any aluminum to get the body off, but did have to do some pushing and pulling on certain areas to free up the body to get it off.

Does anyone have an idea what this tab is for. It was molded into the body and traced and trimmed out. I have never seen this on any other body 289 or 427. The only thing I can figure it is for a prop rod, but I would think that would be on the passenger side. 177311177312177313

Starting to make some progress. Installed what I could for the front suspension. The Breeze battery box. Waiting on the spacers to finish bolting the rear shocks in but the rest of the 3-link is in including the Breeze lower control arms which were highly recommended. Still need to tighten and torque the pan hard bar. I'll permanently attach the truck top piece once I install the rear brake line. Used clecos in all the holes to make sure they all lined up; overkill I know but my inner Harry Hogge got the best of me.

Hi John, Congratulations, it looks like you're well on your way. I haven't been on the forum in awhile. I built a 289, #8995 late 2016 thru mid 2018. Probably the last one with old IRS settup for rear suspension.I don't remember what that tab was intended for, prop rod maybe, but I cut mine off and blended it in.

Ps. You'll have to cut the lower body some above the sidepipe exits, and quite a bit from the lower rear valance edge. Especially the corners, to clear the stock fuel tank, if using that settup. Pete H

Thank you Pete. I had read the body on the 289 was a tighter fit but was still surprised by how much. It will definitely need some trimming.

My first try at brake lines, enjoyed working out the routing. Just need to receive my pedal box to run the rest of them.

Hi Nicole, no worries, I was actually there this morning picking up some MIK and POL items that Nate and Chris helped me out with. One of them being the pedal box. I met with Nate yesterday morning in regard to the MIK items, which I was most concerned with because there was no record of them, and he promptly took care of getting those entered into the system so I could get them this week. It was an added bonus to also get some of the POL items as well. Very happy with the customer service that I received. Thank you, John
