View Full Version : Gen 3 Coyote oil capacity
Hi all,
I tried searching this and I could only find threads on an issue that Moroso corrected long ago. So I have a gen 3 Coyote with the Moroso oil pan which was assembled by Mike Forte. 8 quarts of break in oil were included with the engine. I put in the 8 quarts and the dipstick read far below the low mark indicator. I ordered two more quarts and now I am just at the low indicator mark on the dipstick. My question is, do I leave it there or add more oil? over 10 quarts seems like a lot of oil. FYI I do not have a remote oil filter.
Thank you and Happy Holidays!

Check with Mike Forte as he was the engine supplier. He put the package together, so he would know. Not that unusual that you may have to either remark the dip stick you have or buy another and mark appropriately.

That makes sense. Another 1/2 quart will put me above the minimum line. I just wanted to make sure this is normal. I haven't heard back from Mike Forte regarding his opinion, but I just did not want to be running the engine with too little or too much oil.

did you fill the oil filter before adding oil? that's another 1/4-1/2 quart that many don't account for...
how's your oilpan clearance underneath?

Thanks, Oil pan clearance if fine...I just spoke with Mike Forte on the phone (emailing really isn't his thing. I should of known that by now) and he said add another half quart to bring it above the line and run it.

My Gen 3 Coyote with the Moroso pan takes just under 9-1/2 qts to get to the top line of the stock dipstick. Just did it after the third season of driving a little over a month ago. That was with a new filter (of course) and pre-filling the filter before putting back on. Part of the 9-1/2 qts. I had the engine pretty warmed before draining, so it was drained complete. I assume you're seating the stick all the way down before pulling back out to check? It has a couple o-rings and is a snug fit especially when new.
Just checked, yes the stick is all the way down. 10 quarts has me just at the bottom mark on the dip stick.

just changed my oil - Gen3 Coyote with new Moroso Oil Pan and new oil filter (did not pre-fill the filter prior to installing)
at 10 quarts the fill is up to the bottom of the hash

the added 1/2 quart brings it into the hashmarks

Thanks for the reply. It's been a while since I resolved this problem but here is what I did:
I ended up at 11 quarts and then it was finally reading in the hash marks-on the low end. Problem was it was blowing smoke out of the side pipes. I don't remember if it was Mike Forte, Ford, or Moroso that told me that the pan is a 9 1/2 quart pan and that is how much oil you should put in it. I drained it, refilled it with 9 1/2 quarts, and there is no more smoke. I just have to put an indicator mark on the dipstick so that I know where the fill is or get another longer dipstick.
