View Full Version : Brake / Clutch reservoir location

Getting ready to install my brake / clutch reservoir. I wanted a semi-clear one so I could see the levels. And I wanted to have separate ones for each system. So I bought the 3-in-1 Tilton reservoir. I think I've narrowed it down to two places to mount it. One is in the corner next to the engine (I'll include pictures to show what I mean). I don't think I can put this along the firewall behind the engine because I assume I'm going to need that space for the ECU and wiring. The other option I was thinking about (which is my preferred one right now) is against the firewall in the back of the pedal box. In this location, however, I assume that I would have to cut out the panel that will lay on top of the pedal box. And I'll need to make some kind of access hatch that I can flip open to see the fluid levels. If I went with this location, does anyone know if there's other things that the top of this thing would hit (hood clearance or anything like that)? Is my other location better for some reason? Is there another location I should be thinking about?

Here's the pictures...

Location 1 next to the engine:

Location 2 back of the pedal box:

Check out Edwardb's Type-65 build.
He usually comes up with the best solutions.

X2 - Neither of those locations look good to me. I believe they will be under the lip of the body and not easy to get to.

Agreed both of those locations aren't ideal. No downsides IMO to have the reservoirs in front of the footbox as shown in the picture below from my build. Keeps the other areas open for the fuel and wiring you have yet to complete. Plus easy access for filling and checking, and a direct shot through the front of the footbox to the MC's. I used nutserts and it's a little tight to get them installed in this area. But through bolts would work too if you don't want to mess with nutserts.

I used the same set up. Consider if you're using the struts or in my case a hood rod from Breeze.

Struts require you place it closer to the footbox, hood rod-doesn't much matter how far away.

@edwardb and @CaptB - thanks for the pictures. I should have mentioned that I'm building the Coupe-R. So that knocks out Paul's location because I have additional bracing there. Here's a picture that is a similar angle. I could go for the other side of the frame rail like @CaptB did. I was wondering if those positions would be too close to the heat coming off of the headers? Especially since I'm planning on doing track days. But seeing your pictures I can see why location 1 wasn't ideal. I was. hoping location 2 would work out but I'm worried about the body clearance like you said. So my best bet might be to do something like what @CaptB did. Any other thoughts?

BTW - how do you get the full size image inline with the post? I haven't figured that one out yet.

Just my .02 cents no on the header heat. It's gonna be hot as a mofo anyway but I don't think the res' are going to be any hotter.

@Blumont, as a side note I have a brand new in the box Motive brake bleeder that's set up for the Tilton res'.

If you have an interest I can sell it to you for $35 with free shipping.

So it looks like I'm blocked for both @Edwardb's and @CaptB's locations. Coupe-R bracing in the way of Paul's and the Coyote's size in the way of CaptB's. So I might be forced to go with position 1 (in the flat corner by the pedal box). I took a couple pictures of other possible locations. Let me know if you all have thoughts on pros/cons for these. I'm leaning towards staying away from the firewall so I have room for the wiring. And the fuel lines are smaller so I have more options for placement of them and their regulator.

Here's the side by the pedal box. I'm concerned about hood clearance here. But it seems like it should work.

Or I could just go back against the firewall. But I think I prefer location 1 at the beginning of the post to this for the reasons I stated above.

I might be interested in that. I have always just done my bleeding the old school way. Do those things work well? Why didn't you use yours?

They work awesome.

For some reason I ordered 2 and it's just sitting there unused.

Others can chime in on the usefulness but it's real easy and only takes you to bleed.

So browsing some of the builds, I found a picture of Logan's build. Looks like he landed on the same spot as I did. It does hang down under the body and in this picture I can now clearly see how both of my original spots would. Doesn't look like there's much I can do about that.

Here's a video of a build that uses independent reservoirs and brackets on a Coupe-R. He welded in his own brackets so you would have to have that capability. Just another option.

GrooveM, Thank you for the link to my video. It is a perfect spot to mount the reservoirs with the R chassis.

Rsnake, absolutely! Your video series on your 65 Daytona build are pure gold. I highly recommend them to anyone considering building an FFR 65 Daytona. I’ll definitely rewatch them when I get ready to place an order (hopefully within the next 6-8 months) and put together my order list.

Just to close out what I did. I ended up going with mounting it by the pedal box. I like the idea of having the short lines to the MCs. Worst case it isn't too tough to move if it doesn't work out. I'll have to modify that panel to fit around it of course. I'm probably going to try to make that panel removable also. I set the body on just to see how much clearance there is to it. It isn't too bad. And I have another car with a reservoir that is tough to get to. So I already have a funnel that is setup to reach an area like that. We'll see how it goes...
