View Full Version : Interesting exhaust configuration

I've been thinking a lot about noise reduction and which mufflers to use, whether or not to add a resonator, etc. I am not a fan of the underbody configuration for a rear exit exhaust because of ground clearance issues, and I do like the look of side pipes. It seems Ferrari may have found an interesting compromise in the 50's with the 250 TR, check out the visible side pipes with rear exit:

What are your thoughts? I think it might be a neat idea. Not sure if there are any structural hurdles that others recognize immediately.

Ground clearance.

Let me guess that you're a follower of Wayne Carini's Instagram? :)

I love that config on the Ferrari (which I believe he should have left red), but I think it would look weird on a Cobra.

I was not a follower but I just looked the account up and I think I will be now! I think several people posted about the 250TR recently :)

What about a muffler in the straight part of the 4 into 4 header, before the sidepipe? I had thought about that a while back and was looking at shorty race mufflers. But I never followed up on it.

You'd have the same structural hurdles with that as there are when putting the mufflers underneath...that being snaking the pipes from ahead of the rear wheels to the back.

Even less clearance

As an aside, the 250TR is a perfect example of a body that FFR could design and drop onto an existing platform. I'll bet it's very similar wheelbase, and could fit pretty well on the Spyder GT chassis. I'd build one of those in a heartbeat. I also think they could do a Jag XKE body on the coupe chassis and sell a ton of those.

I bet Ferrari would be, "oh cool look at that".

Different companies respond to replicas differently. Mercedes will sue you into oblivion if you attempt a 300SL Gullwing replica, for example. People have tried. It didn't go well. But there are enough replicas of a variety of cars out there, that it's not an absolute that a replica will immediately get you sued. RCR makes a Jag D-Type (http://race-car-replicas.com/rcr-d-type) and XJ13 (http://race-car-replicas.com/rcr-xj13) replica, for example, along with a Porsche 917 (http://race-car-replicas.com/rcr-917) replica and of course the GT40 (http://race-car-replicas.com/rcr-40-mki-mkii). There are many, many makers of replica cars out there. So just saying, "oh, Ferrari will be mad so we shouldn't do it" misses a potentially huge market opportunity.

Anyway - sorry to the OP. I don't mean to derail the conversation. Just admiring those 250 TR lines. :p

My solution from way back.

An XKE body would be great. Make a coupe or a convertible. Wouln't require a ton of engineering.
