View Full Version : Gen 3 Coyote no start dilemma

My Coupe build is nearly complete with a Gen 3 coyote. First start went perfect as did the following 25 or so starts over the las 5 months for various purposes. Did another start on thanksgiving for for relatives in town and started right up and ran it for about 2 minutes. Went to start it the other day to move the car aside and would not crank. Fuel pump and throttle body make their initial sequences but when turned the key to crank nothing happens except a single click. Everything associated with the RF harness has power (gauges, heater fan ect). Battery fully charged. Checked all mini fuses in PDB and RF panel. My current thoughts are: bad ignition switch, bad starter relay in PDB or bad solenoid. Starter is wired to get 12v from switched side of master disconnect as is the RF harness. Plan: after battery disconnected I will disconnect the starter 12v feed and starter solenoid wire coming off the coyote harness. Reconnect battery and first check for 12v coming from power disconnect switched feed to starter ( should be good since RF harness coming off same switched disconnect post). Next question I suppose is the check that 12v is seen on the starter wire going to the solenoid when the key is turned. If I see 12v then I suppose the solenoid is bad?? If no voltage then bad ignition switch or bad starter relay??
Before proceeding wanted to get feed back on plan or any other thoughts. Thanks

Where is that "click"? Solenoid or relay?

This is a very simple circuit (in theory). Does the starter spin if you hot jump it (with a screwdriver) from the 12V solenoid post? What is your battery voltage? Do your lights come on, and stay on (albeit dimmer) when you twist the key?

FWIW ...

Late generation coyotes (at least in Mustangs) are very sensitive to voltage even with what might appear to be a fully charged battery. Could be a voltage drop issue.

Not saying with any confidence that's what it is, but multiple posts like this turn out to be a battery issue. Seems many go through all the diagnosis steps, suspecting multiple components, and come back to a less than good battery. Don't rule that out too quickly. Have you tried jumping it or a different battery?

Have not tried jumping it yet or putting in different battery. Will try those this week and update the results in another post. Thanks
