View Full Version : Headlight circuit reliability without relays

I am going through my RFW harness making some typical changes and I am pondering whether or not I should add relays to the headlight circuit. It looks like quality 10 or 12 gauge wire to the dimmer switch and out the front harness. I just hate the idea of the toggle dimmer switch and the headlight switch switching high current. So, just wondering, has anyone failed any of these components in normal use?

I was also considering trying to find a nice 7" led headlight so that I could just cut the current draw down to something that would be less worrisome. Preferably, with an integrated ring I could use for park and turn lights.

Any and all input welcome.

Thanks,
Rich

I used relays on my own car when I built it 16 years ago (how can it be that long!) with a dieted Mustang harness but every car that I have built since—about a dozen—has gotten a Ron Francis harness and FFR Delco clone switch without relays. Never had a headlight problem with any of them. Just remember that grounds are all important.

Have done both -- the kit provided Halogens and LED conversions -- with the kit provided RF harness and GM/Delco switch. No issues. Where guys got into trouble is with some of the earlier HID conversions with higher current draw and high voltage requirements especially at start-up. I've used LED's on my last couple builds with no issues and appreciate the lower current draw.

Thanks guys!

I used these with integrated turn-signal/hazard light rings wired to the Ron Francis harness as per the instructions. No issues and it saved me time not having to drill for turn signals/running lights:
