I have an LS3 in my truck build, so not exactly what you're asking about. But this picture shows the relative position of the balancer from the steering rack. Hope that helps.

My pal Dave and I installed a Blue Print 400 SBC in his 33 Hot Rod.
The small circle distributor is about 1/2" from the firewall so space is really limited.
I think he is running the short water pump, but the lower pulley is about 1/2" behind the rack.

Go to the 35 Hotrod Truck Build Thread portion and look for Bruce's Chopped 35. He has lots of detailed pix.

He installed an SBC.

Interesting. My SBC in a hot rod (can't speak to truck, sorry) has a ~2" gap between the balancer and rack.

The car is a 2nd generation 33 HR.
He must be running the long water pump.
The engine installed was a dressed BP 400 & it was tight.

On my 35 with SBC from Blueprint, the front pulley for the whole serpentine belt is less than 1" to the rack. Initially it touched the rack, but that is because I had not gotten the update from FFR about repositioning how the engine connected to the motor mount on the frame. Blueprint really helped here. Depending on your fabrication skills, you could fabricate new mounts and raise up the engine to clear the rack. I have seen a picture where someone had a blown small block but can't remember where. I have seen Gen 1 Hemi engines installed as well as a Buick nailhead. So if there is a will, there is usually a way.

What update about repositioning the motor?
