What are the differences between the 1st gen and 2nd gen stage 1 kits? Does the 2nd gen body fit the 1st gen chassis? I've heard the 2nd gen is wider but is that all in the body or chassis as well?

The chassis and body have had minor changes but gen2 bodies still fit gen1 chassis (many like mine have done this)
No dimensional differences.. just details.

The cockpit is a bit wider on the Gen2, giving more shoulder/hip room.

but that's in the body, not the chassis per se, right? the shape of the doors, primarily (the body comes with the door framework)
All I'm saying is that gen1 chassis with gen2 body still gets that benefit.

The Gen 2 body is cut down at the front of the door opening to match the cut down in the frame. It would be an awful lot of fiberglass work to put a Gen 2 body on a Gen 1 chassis.

Believe me, please. I've done it, as have others.
There is very little (almost zero) work to add a Gen2 body on Gen1 chassis - the combo is even supported from the factory.
They ship with aluminum panels to cover the Gen1 chassis that is exposed.

This is an incorrect statement. As James (RoadRacer) said, there is very little work actually and a few have done it no problem. Yes, you need to cut out the door sill near the front so it can sit on the gen 1 chassis, but I believe FFR even has aluminum pieces that cover this up. Otherwise it fits just fine. Also note, than gen 2 doors fit fine on a gen 1 body (that's what I have) - the inner metal pieces are still gen 1 but the fiberglass is gen2.

I stand corrected.
