View Full Version : My Ride of Shame ( Possible Holley Sniper problem)

Started out for the Leesburg car show and only made it 3 miles. Engine started to rev to 4-5K rpm’s without touching the gas pedal. Shut engine down and coasted into a church parking lot. I attempted to start it 2 more times and it did the same thing. I checked my throttle linkage and nothing was binding. I removed the air cleaner and could see the throttle butterfly’s were closing okay. I called Holley Tech support ( running a Holley Sniper )and the guy thought I may have a vacuum leak. Not sure I agree. I went to car show in DD and talked to a couple of guys there running the Sniper system. Both think not a vacuum leak but possibly the internal fuel pressure regulator has failed. More to come. On a positive note the tow company (Road Runner Towing ) did great job. The driver listened to my suggestions on how to get my car on his truck. He had never towed a Cobra before.

Did you happen to notice the IAC valve position indication on the hand held? They have been having an issue with them sticking in their park position of 20 percent instead of dropping to the 5-10 percent position that you should have set up during the initial set up of the Sniper. Sometimes blipping the throttle will get it to release and go to the normal idle position.

I did try blipping the throttle and it did not help. I did this when it was revving to 2-3k rpm’s. This lasted about a mile when it started the 4-5k rpm’s. As soon as the car starts it revs to 4-5k rpm’s. I did not let it hit the rev limiter (6k) before turning off . It is revving so fast the hand held doesn’t populate.

Is it possible your idle screw got turned? Try turning it 2 full turns counter clockwise and then turn the car on again. If your problem doesn’t change then turn it back.
You can order an inline fuel pressure gauge for $25 on Amazon. Put it on the return side turn the key and let the pump prime. If the pressure goes above 60 psi than you know the regulator has failed

Engine need fuel & air to keep running. Air leak is most likely the problem.

If the throttle plates are closed then the engine can’t rev high unless there’s a vacuum leak. Fuel over pressure would cause the engine to run very rich not increase in rpm.
I would do a thorough search for a vacuum leak and then start the engine with the air cleaner removed. If it revs high with the throttle plates closed then, it’s getting air from somewhere.
Good Luck

yep I agree, with severe fuel over pressure the engine will hardly keep running

Checking for a vacuum leak will be one of the things I check. It is going to be a few days before I can get to troubleshooting the problem. Grandpa duty.
Thanks for the input.
