Hi guys, I sold FFR 641 to a guy in CA. He’s having a difficult time registering it, I sent my title assigned to him and a bill of sale. DMV wants the COO but my dmv kept it when I registered it here in Hawaii.
Any tips or insight for him? Thanks, Karl

COO is surrendered at the time you apply for a title. Since you have a title it's gone. Normal process for every state. That's how the process works. Strange request from our friends in CA.

The CA DMV website for SBCNS registration vehicles clearly states "an original Certificate of Origin OR valid title from another state". It does not state both are required.

Perhaps the person you sold it to is attempting to title and register the car as a "new" vehicle? It looks like Cal DMV can require the registrant to produce a certificate of origin when registering a new car.

Don't make the mistake in assuming that the clerk behind the counter actually knows (or cares) what the state motor vehicle code requires.

I'm guessing the buyer made the mistake of saying "kit car" at the DMV, which triggers a completely different interaction script from the counter jockey.
The proper discussion starts with: "Good {Morning,Afternoon}, I'd like to register this used vehicle I purchased. What paperwork do you need first?"
No more, no less.
He might even have to go through the SB100 process to register especially if the title is not a 1965 Daytona Coupe (which I am assuming it is not). The bigger issue with CA is the smog requirement on anything past 1975. My roadster is titled as a 2020.
Superformance and Backdraft also go through the SB process to get a title in CA.

Actually the title says 1965 Shelby Daytona! Because the clerk here couldn’t find Factory five as a manufacturer.
I do believe he said too much when attempting to register it.

I would tell him to go back and try again , but don't volunteer any extra info. It really is the luck of the draw. Or just hire one of those third party title assistance companies.
