View Full Version : How did y’all finish your parts with welded in ball joints?

It’s coming close to time for me to decide what to do with each part.

The ball joints create a problem. When heated for PC, they’ll run oil out, right? Will paint even stick around all that grease? I’d really rather powder coat them but will do what’s necessary.

So, what did y’all do and how did you prep for whatever finish you did?

Thanks in advance!

50 hours of disassembly later….(there was a bunch of tying up loose ends in that)

I believe the standard practice is (with the boots and zerk fittings off) to wash all the grease out with solvent, then thoroughly clean the arms before powdercoating. I also seem to remember an additional step where you bake the arms with the studs oriented downwards to help any remaining grease run out, but I could be wrong on that.

After that reassemble and re-grease.

Thanks earl! That seems to be what I’m hearing so I think I’ll head down that path.

That is what I did. Clean them out real good. I then baked them in the oven for 20 minutes to burn anything else that would in there. Then power coated them. Work out fine.

I painted mine on my truck build to avoid the cleanout necessary to powder coat. Cleaned them thoroughly on the outside and then masked as needed. Used 2-part epoxy sprayed on and turned out fine. I have full fenders so not real visible. But would have done the same thing without fenders.
